It looks like another remainer scare story may be proven wrong with BMW choosing Oxford to build the electric Mini according to this report:

When we get our trade deal with the US, those Minis will be tariff free. That should be worth something to BMW - and others.

    Ahem.
If you read my post it very clearly says "may be proven wrong" - not has been. ;)
    Have a look.
Nice try at misdirection even if you did fail.

You're normally at pains to point out how this is an unsubstantiated rumour at this stage, by anonymous sources, were this something negative about the UK.

It'd be good for the UK if we did build them here, and we've likely to, but this is pretty much a non-story.
And yet such unsubstantiated rumour pervades the pro-remain portion of this thread - but of course, my linked report is not pro-EU doom-laden parp, is it?

Someone must instruct media to desist with all these non-stories.
The pro-remain protagonists don't like them.

Just pointing out the double standard. Hearsay is only allowed when it's pro-Brexit.

The same US that wants a 35% import tariff on foreign made cars?

I suspect they're likely to want to get their money back on the investment in Oxford, and figure enough cars are going to be sold there to justify the risk. I mean electric Mini's should sell remarkably well in any market.

    Trump did say that.

However, what Trump says is not necessarily what he does.

Talks begin next week on a US/UK trade deal. Doubt if it will include 35% tariffs on anything.

Maybe so. However Ford abandoned their Mexico plant to a round of applause. Only to announce that they intended to build a facility in China. With improved shipping times with a new Panama canal open. The world continues to get smaller. Trump's time is ebbing away.

Fair point, but it goes to show the mindset - he's making a huge deal about keeping stuff made in the US (whilst absolutely nothing from his empire is made in the US), so he's going to be trying to push for a deal that favours US production (maybe).

That would be brilliant news for Britain.
With the future of the personal car linked so closely to plug in electric it will be great news. A commitment by the British Government to push this with continuing extra subsidies and infrastructure for charging stations could help the decision.
BMW has still to decide but today's press conference in Brussels might show that progress is being made in the Brexit talks and frictionless trade will be a reality.
As someone thinking my next purchase will be a plug in electric the progress of the mini version is very interesting.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

If the trade deal doesn't happen with BMW having a huge manufacturing facility in the USA they could set up a new plug in electric line there.
Although I am not sure that plug in electric is of interest to the American President.

  • Another example of EU coercion and intransigence - this at Poland's (admittedly perhaps intimidating) desire for legal reform regarding election of Polish judiciary.
The EU is on the brink of taking the nuclear option of stripping Poland of its voting rights in Brussels in response to plans by its rightwing government to “abolish” the independence of the country’s judiciary.
The commissioner also called on the Polish government to respect the right of journalists to do their job, after a Brussels-based TV journalist was accused by state-controlled Polish TV of asking politically motivated questions with intent “to harm Poland” after she sought information from the European commission about its intentions with regard to protecting the rule of law.

I wonder why instead not a huge fine for Poland as the EU are said to be attempting in regard to migrants?
