Can I give it away?

On Friday morning a courier turned up with a very large tv addressed to me, I hadn't ordered it so refused it after taking a photo of the delivery note and label. I contacted the company who sent it, they said check all your cards, do experian and they cancelled the account it was ordered from. On Saturday morning same courier is at my door with the tv again telling me his office contacted the company who said they'd contacted the sender and it was a gift (this turned out to be a lie), I signed for it as I was going out and didn't have time for messing about. We I came back much later in the day there was a note through the door telling me to call a number asap, I did, there was a guy telling me 'his' tv had been delivered to the wrong person and he'd been out to collect it but no-one was in and could he come back for it. I smelt a rat and told him no and tried to contact the company again but they were shut. On Sunday evening I sent a lengthy email to the company's directors' office telling them all that had happened and could they help. Monday mid-day I got a call from them telling me it was a fraudulent transaction and they would send a courier out to collect it and that I was not to give it to anyone unless I'd heard from them with a time and courier's name. She asked when I could be in and I told her Tues & Weds mornings, she said she'd get right back. I called back at 3.30pm and was told again she'd organise it and get back, I'm still waiting to hear from her. I have spent two mornings waiting for the collection, I have been 100% honest with the company keeping them informed of everything that has been happened but it seems they can't be bothered organising the collection.
I can't see what more I can do to return this tv, it is very big and would cost a fortune for me to return it to them. I am an innocent party in all this and I am worried everytime my doorbell goes even though if the fraudsters come back I'm calling the police. The company has treated me badly, I've put myself out to help them recover the tv but it seems they can't be bothered. I understand that after a period of time if they don't collect it the tv will become my property to give away if I want, does anyone know how long this is and what steps I may have to take to do it?
Hope all this makes sense.

Whatever you do, do not give it to someone who claims that it is their TV. I can't quite remember the details but this is a common scam.
You cannot give it away, you could sell it for a fair market value but the money would be theirs, so no mates rates.
There are specific steps to take before you can do this, someone will be along to help with those.0 -
That's right... after a period of time it's yours to do with as you like.Ziggy_Stardust wrote: »On Friday morning a courier turned up with a very large tv addressed to me, I hadn't ordered it so refused it after taking a photo of the delivery note and label. That period of time is six years.
Although not quite your scenario, this Derbyshire Trading Standards leaflet explains your obligations.0 -
Call the company, tell them you are unhappy that they haven't collected and give them a day / time to collect. Explain you are not being put out any more by them0

It is a common scam, dont had it over to anyone that claims it is theirs, call the company and get them to arrange its collection as it is not your and you never ordered it.0 -
Who is the retailer?0

Can you hand it in at your local police station?0

You can certainly threaten to charge them for storage.Ziggy_Stardust wrote: »...hmm wonder if I can charge them storeage then

They have no obligation to meet your demands unless they agree to being charged, and them doing nothing is not agreeing.0 -

I've just come off the phone to consumer advice (phone number on the leaflet from wealdroam, thanks) who have told me to phone the police on 101 as they are stolen goods and to see what they say. They have also reported it to Trading Standards.0 -
It is not yours, so giving it away, throwing it away or even leaving it outside for them to resolve could lead to criminal charges,0
