  • Hey everyone - your nappy cakes are all so impressive...!

Hope someone can help me - I want to send a friend a nappy cake (from me and some friends) and don't have time to do myself, so wondered if anyone could recommend a company which are good and will giftwrap and deliver direct with a message?

    Thanks everyone...

    Hi scaredandindebt,

I can do cakes to order and send them by courier to the recipient if you really don't fancy having a go yourself. The cake itself is cellophaned wrapped with the gift card and ribbon and bow. then it's packed in a double walled cardboard box with polystyrene "worms" and sent by courier. I do a variety of different cakes ranging from a box of sock cupcakes to a 3 tier cake packed with bits and pieces. I make them all to order so can put whatever you want in it or work to whatever budget you have in mind. This is a 3 tiered neutral one that I have done.

  • Ok - I have decided to give it a go and try and keep myself occupied in the dark winter months. You lot have inspired me and I ned to get my bum into gear.

I have collected a number iof bits of pieces I have seen around but need to know where to get:

    Cake boards
    small rubber bands
    ribbon

I dont like ebay so dont use it.

Any tips, help will be most appreciated. Cant wait to get on with my first cake!! xxx
  • HI kazimojo69..

    welcome to the madhouse.

cake boards you can buy from asda or improvise with pizza boards, large plastic plates covered, even good cardboard.. it all depends on the weight of your cale ingredient.
elastic bands can be found in post offices, woolworths
for ribbon i usually search market haberdashery stalls for large bundles made up from the end of rolls.
i have even found some bundles in charity shops.

Good luck and don't forget to post the piccies.

    Hi Kazimojo,

Welcome to you, you'll soon be completely hooked!

I use ordinary cake boards with mine when I package them up although they would be perfectly fine without any board at all as the bands hold them in very securely.

As for bands, for the small rubber bands to use on the rolled individual nappies I use horse plaiting bands. You should be able to get these from anywhere that sells any kind of horsey items! A bag of 500 should be around about £1. I find them great as they're the perfect size and I can get them in white which looks alot nicer. You will need ordinary bands to put around each of the tiers though.

I do a bit of floristry aswell so for ribbon I use the poly ribbon that florists use and I get this from a local wholesaler aswell as the cellophane.

Good luck, can't wait to see pics! If you get stuck just shout as there is always someone around on here that will be happy to help.

Anyone know how to make a 'pull bow'?

I got 10 from a florist supplier, but they're not made up, just got the ribbon lengths

Have fiddled about but I really have no clue!

    Hi everyone,

I've just had a right challenge! My mum went on a shopping spree for one her staff who has a baby girl due in a couple of weeks. She went mad and bought loads for me to do her a nappy cake. She only wanted 3 tier as she said 4 would be over the top so I've just had to try and get everything into a 3 tier neatly! Here's what went in it:

That looks absolutely fabulous, I've seen the nappy cakes before but not when they are covered up. Is there a sight giving step by step instructions ? I'm going to try and make my sister one.

  • Louise- on my pull bows, I hold the two loose ends in my right hand and the bottom bit just above the ribbon in my left hand and pull the strings downwards and then the bow should start formimg. sorry not good at explaining.

    Hi joto,

I'm not sure there are any sites with step by step instructions. The way I do them is do the cake in the normal way, I then use a blanket or shawl for the biggest tier. Fold it so you have a long rectangle the same height as the tier. Then basically place it around the outside of the nappies. I use a band to secure it as don't like to pin blankets, the band is then covered by a ribbon around it. The middle and top tiers I do exactly the same but use muslin cloths instead. Other people use clothes for the layers so it is entirely up to you. I find blankets and muslins easier to work with if you want a neat layer.
Best thing is just to have a practice and play around. It's not hard really, just ocassionally need 3 hands!
    Hope this helps
