Nappy Cakes

I would love to make up one of these for my boyfriends sister who has recently announced she is expecting baby number two! Just a couple of questions, how many nappies do you need to make a three tier cake? I want to keep my eyes peeled for the nappies when they are on offer you see.
Also can anyone think of any ideas for what I could put in it as she already has a little girl and so she has most of the bits she needs. Saving hard for a brighter future!:beer:0 -
Hi Siren I use pampers size 2 nappies and use approximately 40 in each three tier cake but this can depend on what I put inside. Most of my cakes pictured include the soft toy, baby blankets, sleepsuits, 2 vests, cotton buds, johnsons talc and soap, scratch mitt and bath bomb for Mum. I find these are the most successful ingredients to keep the cake looking professional. But obviously it is trial and error.
I tend to look out for offers on nappies and bought a load in Sainsburys this week because there was a third off so I saved lots of money. Good luck and post us a picture when you have finished.Little Miss Chatterbox

Thanks for the info Shelley!
As a 20 year old mum of none I don't have a clue when it comes to babies! Infact when I encounter them I always worried I will drop them hehe! This will be the first new born I will be meeting so to speak since my little sister was born! So I would like to give something special but I need to make sure I get the right stuff hehe.
Is size 2 for newborns?? Saving hard for a brighter future!:beer:0 -
Hiya again Siren I use the Pampers size 2 newborn nappies in a yellow packet but you can use other sizes if you wish although I find these the best. Just make sure you stock up on elastic bands and don't forgot the silver cake board xxxxLittle Miss Chatterbox

Awesome thanks Shelley.
Yet another stupid question, what size elastic bands work best? I would guess it would be tiny one that go around the nappy once? Saving hard for a brighter future!:beer:0 -
I would use the smaller ones but you still need larger ones to wrap around each tier. I found the brown/yellow bands best as they don't show up under the ribbon, the coloured bands not so good. I bought a huge pack of bands in Woolies for about 54p and they are ideal xxLittle Miss Chatterbox

Hi Sorry to buy in, I use Size 3 pampers or size 3 huggies, that way the cake has a longer life so to speak and doesn't need to be dismantled straight away. Most newborns are only in size 1 nappies a matter of a couple of weeks, then size 2's a few weeks. My daughter was only in size 1 nappies 1 week and then was in size 3 nappies by 3 weeks old! Just mean the new mum gets some time to recover before having to worry about dismantling the cakes and also it can be on display to visiting family and friends for a while longer. I also use 3-6 month clothes, again for the same reason, and also that everyone buys newborn/first size then all of a sudden you run out of clothes!Raising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0

That sounds a good idea Rusty! I will have to wait a couple of months to make it up until after we have moved! I don't think the nappy cake would last a house move form Lincolnshire to Hampshire!! I'll be dreading taking it that far when we give it to her hehe:beer: Saving hard for a brighter future!:beer:0

I tend to use the newborn because the nappies are not patterned and look much better in the cake. But again this is personal preference - do huggies do plain nappies?Little Miss Chatterbox
