Thanks Moonpenny but I think I may need a little more convincing. Hubby would love another but not sure if 3 would be a nightmare!!!!
Will have to decide within next year as i'm not getting any younger lol x

I look forward to seeing your new designs ;)

Yes I'm really glad to finish all my cakes for Xmas because I was getting a bit snowed under with everything. I'm working 8 hr morning shifts all weekend (have to be up by 430 am yuck) and then nights on Tues so I'm struggling to get everything done. I've also made 2 hampers for friends this week and I had to go shopping this afternoon after work ( ) to get all the bits to make a hamper for my boss for Christmas so have to make that tomorrow.
Plus I've been making pots of gold and snowman soup all week for other people.

Sorry I was having a bit of a ramble then -I'm so tired need to go to bed ready for work tomorrow xxx

Oh and forgot to add hubby is 12 hrs nights from tomorrow up until Xmas Eve so its going to be a nightmare - kids home, work and trying to get everything ready for Christmas xx ARRGGGG xxx

My OH is the one who needs convincing ... not me :rotfl: he says I have enough and am not allowed any more :( ... however someone once told me I would have 3 children ... although I don't know if they meant in total or not as I lost one last year so that could have been my third ... everything else they told me has happened so who knows!

Moonpenny I think you should leave your minis and not change them as they look fantastic!

I having been thinking of making these for a while. I have not seen any in my area and think due to my job I would have a good source of new parents.

I am going to look around in the sales for bits and pieces to get me started but I am a bit stuck with where to get, cake boards, ribbons and cellophane.

What size of boards should I be ordering for a 2 tier cake and roughly how much ribbon would I need per cake.

I know it will all be trial and error initially but I don't want to order too much to start with.

    Any advice would be grateful.

    Thank you

Phew!!!!!! Shelley, I’m shattered just reading your post. I think all that’s left for you to do over Christmas is put your feet up (if you get the chance!)
My S and DIL had a new baby son last year. DIL has got 2 children from previous marriage, aged 16 and 18, so you have got plenty of time yet!

Rusty – not going to change them much, just not keen on paper on top!

lrlrip – Welcome to the madhouse. You will soon be hooked I’m sure.
    Cake Boards from www.thebagnboxman.co.uk
Cellophane / florist ribbons etc from www.flowerhour.co.uk
I get most of my ribbons from local market but others order on-line from different places plus ebay. That goes for above as well. Be careful about postage costs as they can be expensive.

Everybody uses similar, but different in the way we put them together if you know what I mean!

I use 12 inch cake Boards for 2 and 3 Tiers, and 7 inch boards for Minis. But like I said, everyone uses different. If you want to use Florist ribbon around all 3 Tiers, I reckon on approx 2 mt.

You might be better (if you don’t want to order quantities of stuff just yet) to pay a bit more for “thick2 cake boards in supermarkets. Same with ribbons and maybe Cello from florist shop. You pay a lot more that way, but you won’t have to buy loads.
Don’t forget to post those pics when finished!

Thank you very much for that. I am looking forward to "attempting" my first one.

    Hi Irlrip,
I have previously used the cake boards from Asda, pretty sure they were around 69p.
Although the boards are probably smaller than you would initally choose, I find that they still give enough support, even with toiletries inside.
I just add some clear packaging tape to the bottom for extra support.

  • The lady in the local market has just sold another 'christmas cake' for me. Was really hoping that I didn't have to store that one til next year.

Have got another pink 3 tier to do, my friend has just had a little girl.
Just got one more friend to go so hopefully, that will be the last of my freebies for a while .... it's costing me a fortune in free nappy cakes!
I thought the idea of this was for us to make a little profit!!! I am sure I have give away, more than I have earnt.

I have just placed a leaflet in the window of the local newsagents (£4 for a month). In quite a busy market town, so fingers crossed!!!

Do you actually put the tape on the nappies? Sorry to be thick!!!!:o

Sorry Irlrip, I don't quite understand what you mean. I don't use any tape on the nappies. Once rolled each nappy is held together with a clear plastic hair band or rubber band, and a piece of string tied around each layer.
Once the cake is wrapped in cellofane, I then add plenty of strips of the clear packaging tape, to the bottom of the cake, just to give that little bit of extra support.

  • When I was living in Spain, after using the local 'pizza' takeaway, I noticed that the pizza's were always placed on a white circle of cardboard.
I wonder whether this would be a cheaper option than using cake boards?, especially when the bottom tier is being covered by a blanket?
