That Thomson is also available from John Lewis, £99 with free delivery+ free 2yr guarantee. There is also a code to get £20 off £100, so definitely worth ordering from there if it's any good!

It depends on the HDD recorder - if it has a Scart or video in socket then maybe, otherwise not.

Freeview PVRs cannot record from external sources. DVD recorders with hard disks can.
  • RDR-HX525 - it's 'only' got the 80gb disk - but I only paid £110 off ebay for it and it does everything I need (copies to dvd at 8x speed from its hard disk). Good quality RGB input too. Also has progressive output to my HD TV.
I just looked up the spec. on the Sony website and it says it does not have an RGB input.

what is a hdd please? I just want a simple to use recordable dvd players as cheap as possible. any advice please. I am not techy advanced as you can see.
HDD is hard disc drive. you NEED this, otherwise you can only record one or two programmes as yo uare limited by the DVD capacity. Most of the stuff yo uwill not want to save forever either so you'll just watch it and then delete it - no point burning it to a disc (and the expense of having to buy so many discs)
We bought a DVD recorder but the menus were conplicated and it was very hard to use. We have exchanged it for this one, which i recommend.
Wharfedale DVDR24HD160F it is on offer at £159.99 (£20 quid off) in Argos at the moment.
Wharfedale DVDR24HD160F 160GB HDD DVD Recorder and Freeview. icon_dagger.gif533/6009 (Catalogue number)Save 1/3 on HDMI to HDMI cable when bought with this item. Save £20.00 £159.99 Was £179.99 170-5336009A68UC431504T.jpgmore info We are really happy with it and if you are not a techhie expert you can easily get things wrong as DVD recorders are much more complicated to use than VHS players. Wharfedale is a BRITISH company too, with a good reputation, but i think this is an exclusive to Argos - they don't seem to be availalbe elsewhere :(
note that teh £20 offis not shown in the catlaogue but if you use the product code above fromteh website you will get it at that price.

Ithas a built in freeview box too, which is better than the one we have as it seems to break up less. Looks smart too.
Do note that the £20 off is not shown in the catalogue but if you use the product code above from the website you will get it at that price. We used the reserve facility to make sure it was in stock.
    Hope this helps.

Could not agree more with the above. We bought a bargain liteon DVD recorder and had an absolute nightmare firstly getting it set up properly (while with telewest box) and then recording with it. In the end a TV aerial chap we had in looking at something else did us a favour and got it working, but it was hit and miss whether you would succeed recording anything with confusing menus and user error (probably). I am not a true techy, but I am not dunce when it comes to these things either. Now dismantled.

Recently bought a wharfedale WTDR160 HDD/freeview from Argos (it was the one they reduced from £150 to 74.99, only to put it back up to £99 the next day (but with £10 voucher back).

5 mins to set up, and 2 buttons to press when you pretty much want to do anything. Records 80 hours of telly. Half bought it because of this "pause live TV" stuff, but have hardly used this functionality, instead preferring just to dump loads of progs to it at the start of week, for leisurely viewing later whenever. Fantastic piece of kit. Even better, no buttons on it, so youngest two cannot break it, and it fast forwards/rewinds at up to 128x normal speed.

The two smallest of moans, it sits horizontal or vertical on stand (it is small) and when sitting horizontally, it hums a bit and occasionally the sound gets out of sync, quickly rectified by simply playing again.

I got a great little dvd recorder from Asda recently for £99. I know it's not the cheapest around but it's great value - it works perfectly. It writes to any format, plays MP3 and WMA files on DVD, full support for DivX, lots of inputs including USB for playing photos or videos from a camera or flash drive.

A lot of the cheaper models crash, need firmware upgrades or are fussy about the discs you use.

BTW I have Sky+ (and got it free) so I have no need of a HDD recorder.

How about this one, dual freeview thingy (so you can record 2 different channels at once), 160Gb hard drive, Top-up TV compatible, and only £100.

OH and I are gonna get one for our Christmas pressie to eachother.

    So has this got Freeview?
    It pays to challenge
