if all you want to do is record tv channels all which are available on sky then the sky plus box is a no brainer and its no subscription free as long as you subscribe to any sky package,if however you are wanting transfer say old vhs home movies on to dvd or the like then it has to be the dvd reorder
  • Just bought a SONY DVD/HDD recorder to supplement my SKY+ box. It is VERY useful - record from sky onto HDD on sony - then write to a DVD to archive it if I want to keep it. Dunno about how legal this is re copyright etc. but it works well!! Sony can control the SKY+ box too - clever these Japanese!!

Hi, Which Sony did you go for? I'm looking for something similar.

    Thanks.
  • RDR-HX525 - it's 'only' got the 80gb disk - but I only paid £110 off ebay for it and it does everything I need (copies to dvd at 8x speed from its hard disk). Good quality RGB input too. Also has progressive output to my HD TV.

Is it possible to copy from a VHS tape to a DVD using one of these ?

It is if you get a copy decoder, search on e-bay for them.

If all I want to do is supplement my Sky+ box, which seems to be perpetually full, then all I need is the dvd recorder. what am I going to get extra from the HDD box??

If you are getting Sky the the + box is the way to go. I have the cable V+ similar box and it is great for recording series just a couple of presses and done. However there will come a time when your Sky+ is hdd is getting fullish, especially if you like to record series. So a dvd recorder is usefull for archiving the stuff you want to keep.
