Money Moral Dilemma: Is it mean to question my share of the bill?

No, but the wine bottle is usually shared between a few people.A bottle of mineral water does not cost as much as a restaurant bottle of wine!
We always just split. We have a teetotal friend who might have a couple of cokes, a mocktail or hot chocolate or something. To be honest, I've checked prices after and there's only been a couple of quid in it - and she always says to just split. I often don't have a dessert but still split.
I think your friends are at fault here for not pointing it out. Mine always do, but the person nearly always refuses to tot theirs up separately.

I'm usually a non-drinker and designated driver so a close friend usually suggests when we're in company that I didn't drink alcohol so shouldn't share the cost of the booze.0

I've always faced this problem as a teetotaller.
With my close friends, it's never an issue as they always take into account that I don't drink and they drink copious amounts of alcohol! They always say, you pay this much and we'll split the larger amount.
However on the other hand, some other friends insist on splitting the bill evenly between the adults, even though they have 2 children (who eat adult meals) that they think everyone else should also pay a portion of the children's bill. They also drink large volumes of alcohol.0 -
Just think of it as a friendship tax.0

Your the designated driver.......................so my answer to this is that they should all chip in and pay for your meal.If they disagree then you let them know where the local taxi firms are and the costs.0

Not unfair for you to say something.
You're saving them money by paying some of the drinks bill AND taking them home!
If they don't like it, leave first for them to make their own way home...0 -
Yes it's mean.0

Why go out with friends that you resent?? I don't get it.0 -
When I go out with friends we don't have this problem. We just each pay for what we have rather than splitting the bill. Not everyone has all three courses so why should they pay the same as someone that does. Your situation is the same - you are not consuming the alcohol so why pay? In addition if you are always the designated driver it would be nice if your friends offered to pay for you sometimes anyway as a thank you!0
