Barclays stopping my mum buying a house

You seem to be falling foul of the faster payment limits as much as anything (as well as trying to stretch your third party authority). Its not Barclays fault - its you trying to circumvent security requirements and limits.
Why can't mum contact Bank by phone and ask them how best to do it - CHAPS probably best. Surely you aren't just trying to avoid a one off fee?
You seem to be trying to avoid mum dealing with her own affairs. If she isn't competent should she be buying a house? Not meaning to be facetious but that's how it looks and why things are being flagged. You need a much strong PoA if you want to control everything.
Or send a cheque for solicitor to clear ahead of completion?0 -
You will have flagged up the account as you logged in as your mum which is not allowed as part of third party access, this why you were unable to have your own log in, your mums money is now not safe as you have admitted that you log in pretending to be her.
Now I dont know how barclays work but where I work this means that the access to the account is put on hold till the account holder visits branch to un lock the account and access is re activated for the account holder. This happens when we get customers who queiry money going out of account when they then admit that they are not the only one with access to the account which is not allowed.
I wouldnt think you will be able to make a chaps payment as a third party mandate, as this is for paying bill by DD, requesting statements, making transfers etc. ID is required for CHAPS and It asked if the customer is present when the payment is set up.
I think you will need to wait till your mum can visit herself to try and unlock the account. Its a little concerning that you say 'Against my advice' its her account not yours so you shouldn't be advising her to do or not do something, that said it would lead to me asking if the customer is being duped into a transaction which I would have to conclude if you said something like that this maybe what Barclays thought too..
Good luck with trying to sort out the issue though.

Yep, It's one rule for the rich and famous and another for us ordinary bods who go around pretending to be our mummys.0 -
reply inline:
I don't think that's fair. Being of sound body and mind doesn't mean you can use, or would be comfortable with, online banking. Whatever your age.
Of course it means they CAN use the internet, being 'comfortable' with it is something else.
Not if they don't know how.
And, within the older generation, lots of older people don't know how to use the internet.
Numerically lots, perhaps - but an ever-decreasing minority in the 65 to 74 age group
https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/itandinternetindustry/bulletins/internetusers/2016#recent-internet-use-is-on-the-increase-for-those-aged-65-and-over
Ever decreasing perhaps. But a minority that, undeniably, exist, probably in the tens of thousands, whether you like it or not.
And of those who do many don't trust it. I regularly come across people who use the internet but never dare pay for anything online, let alone bank.
This is just a product of fear and ignorance; it behoves their peers - and all the younger generations - to help educate them.
Maybe it is a product of fear and ignorance. But that doesn't make it any less real. Ok, you go out and explain to the 87 year old who has never used a computer in her life how to use one. She can't understand a movie dvd startup menu. She doesn't want to know. She doesn't need to know. Good luck!
To these groups of people online banking is completely unfathomable.
I'm unclear exactly who 'these groups' are, but I dispute your assertion as it has no basis.
'these 'groups' are those who don't trust the internet and those who simply don't know or don't want to use it (and why should they - it's a tool, not an obligation). They exist. Get used to it. This is reality.
You may think it's 'hardly new or difficult' but you cannot (and should not) apply that view to all.
It's not a view it's a statement of fact.
It is a view. It IS new to many people. And it IS difficult and completely impenetrable to many people. That's a fact. Yours is a view.

And I'll only add that this part of the discussion is getting off topic so I'm not going to join in any further debate on these issues - it would clearly be utterly pointless!0 -

So is money laundering. Unfortunately banks get fined for having inadequate procedures. As with any business. Some customers are simply to much trouble to bother with. As think that the "rules" shouldn't apply to them.0 -
If your mum doesn't know how to do online banking, she should speak too her branch about attending one of Barclay's Digital Eagles sessions0

Assuming they run them in Spain ?0 -

My mum is an expat pensioner in Spain and right now I'm in the US on holiday. My mum is leaving Spain and buying a house in the UK. My mum has banked with Barclays for over 40 years and I have third party access. Unfortunately Barclays refused to give me internet access so I have to log into her account as her to make transactions for her (she doesn't know how to do it).
3 weeks ago we tried to put down a large deposit, as my Mum is in Spain I logged into her bank account as her using a VPN (so it looks like I'm effectively in the UK). I got her to ring up the bank and check the transaction later as they stalled it. Sadly against my instructions she told them that I helped her which put a security flag on it. In the end she was able to do it herself by phoning the bank every day and transferring £15000 a time until complete, but she had a lot of hassle doing so going through several departments and layers of security.
Now we need to buy the house. I will be back in the UK next week and she will still be in Spain. We have lost all confidence in Barclays to make this transaction. We are worried if I go into a Barclays store and make it happen next week it will be stopped again and the only option will be to transfer £15000 at a time which will take ages, and we will miss out the completion date and the office clerks will just shrug their shoulders.
Any advice?
Thanks
Quoting this for posterity. Reading it again this is filled with red flags and is pretty much admitting to fraud to breach money laundering regulations. I've forwarded it to someone to have a look at, as there could well be even more wrong with this case than is being admitted to.0
