But you can't have traffic lights at every T-junction - it would cost a fortune.
So what is a yellow box for then? Are you saying that if you are on a side road you can't enter the yellow box to turn right until the traffic both ways is clear?
Absolutely correct - that is precisely what I am saying.
From HC Rule 174: You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic.
If you are entering from a side road intending to turn right there can be no oncoming traffic - only traffic moving from right to left or vice-versa
- so you must not enter.
Yellow boxes at T junctions cause loads of problems - especially if they are painted wrong in the first place. See here:

Ok, so what if you are on a side road and turning left? Your rule would mean that you could never turn left unless you were quick enough to sneak in front of the car to your right on the main road because if you positioned your car on the yellow box before the car to your left moved then you would be breaking the law as you would be stationary. And as you say, the car to your right would always have the right of way.0 -

Yes, again, you are correct , in that one couldn't turn left until the exit to the left was clear and there were no vehicles approaching from the right.
I see nothing wrong or unusual with that.
If the traffic flow is that heavy then traffic lights are certainly required at such a junction.
And I wouldn't be happy with the idea that anyone needed to 'sneak in front of the car to your right' - that sounds like a recipe for an accident similar to the OP's - or perhaps a bit of road rage from the person who has been 'sneaked in front of'.
And they are not my rules - they are the rules in the Highway Code.0 -

But in London when there is bumper to bumper traffic you would have to sneak in otherwise you would never be able to turn left. I have seen people stopping on yellow boxes all the time when they are entering them from a side road so I just assumed that it was allowed. When I did my driving test 30 years ago, I don't remember my instructor saying anything about yellow boxes at T-junctions because there weren't any on the routes he took me on.0 -

I agree with you - the law is broken routinely in London and many other busy cities thousands of times a day - it doesn't make it correct to do so though.
I feel that the law is an !!! in many situations.
My pet gripe is the 70mph limit - e.g. heading North from Carlisle to Glasgow on a near deserted M74 in the 'wee small hours' of the morning. Not a vehicle in sight - either in front or behind me, and I must drive at 70mph max.0
