This whole faff is down to two things:
* NW closed so many small branches a few years ago, that people were left with no means of accessing a branch within a reasonable distance. For us, that meant a round trip of 40 to 50 miles, dependent upon which town or city we travelled to.
* Cheques are anachronistic. The time is not far off when they will be no longer printed. Every business and every employee will have to recognise this and set out their arrangements accordingly. The time to do this is now.
Mobile coverage: we have none at all in our village, which is just 2.5 miles down the main A road to the coast, from the town of Louth, which has full coverage and Fibre. It happens all over the country, which makes us very angry when Kevin B****y Bacon is on TV as a BT engineer planting phone masts in the Scottish mountains and promising 95% coverage by 2020!I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

"I tried to pay in a cheque at my local PO - this morning into my Nationwide account and was told that I needed a "paying in slip"
And where do you get "paying in slips" from ?"
Just order a pre printed paying in book from your bank. IF your bank has banking arrangements with the Post Office then simply bank your cheques in with the paying in slip (and envelope supplied by the Post Office). Paying in slips also usually found at the back of your own cheque book. Simple really.0 -

Some banks have separate post office paying in books which are different to the paying in books that are used in the bank, they are ordered via a post office number and they send the slip and supply of envelopes to the customer, so they are read by the post office systems and are credited correctly.

For Cheques UK banks will be offering, in 6-18 months, paying in and next working day credited funds, via images submitted through Mobile Banking apps.

I think that is a statement of your opinion, not fact.

Isn't that open to fraud/forgery ?
In any case - that will help cheques to survive even longer !!0 -

So you want fast easy cheque handling, now you malign faster cheque processes....
Given you live in a mobile black hole Im sure you will be safe.0 -
That service has been in place in the USA for some time.
I'm sure if there were large fraud implications they would have discontinued, and we would not be starting it.0 -

You'd think so wouldn't you? After seeing the lax way Americans deal with credit cards I assumed that credit card fraud couldn't be a big problem there. Their credit card fraud is about twice as bad as ours.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
Since HSBC closed my local branch I pay in cash via the Post Office, it's actually quicker as they just swipe the card and don't require paying in slips at the PO!.
Checks are a different story but luckily I don't come across many of those..0
