Cheques are necessary for paying workmen etc - they don't tend to have card readers with them - and many don't appear to have bank account numbers available (so can't pay by transfer) - and cash is not safe to hold !

You don't need a card reader to take electronic payments., you don't even need to give out your bank details. All you need is a mobile phone and you can take payments by PayM.

You would have thought that technology would allow electronic transfer ?

Well 'they' do. Except you are using a non electronic method.........

    Consider yourself lucky then
Where I live - bank accounts are new to many people !

Where would that be then? I refuse to believe it's anywhere in the UK.

That's why we need to abolish cheques and give these people a kick up the backside so they can move into the 21st century.

If it's a small job (less than £200) then I will happily pay by cash or that's what they want. If it's a larger job then I'll offer to pay by bank transfer (They must have a bank account to pay in the cheque).
Even if they go home, print an invoice, and post it to me first class the next day and then I pay by bank transfer when I receive it; they will still get the money quicker than giving them a cheque on the day!.

Can't be Timbuktu, which had mobile coverage as far back as 2005 according to a quote in Wirelessness: Radical Empiricism in Network Cultures by Adrian Mackenzie (2010, MIT Press, p.179).

No it isn't. It is simple and reasonable to establish means of payment before choosing the provider, I've not come across one yet that won't accept an electronic transfer if arranged in advance. (except small beer like the window cleaner who has his 15 quid in cash).

You have an expensive window cleaner.

Mine prefers his £12 paid by bank transfer
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Yup, Berkshire is very expensive. But we try to keep him sweet as he's a good house-painter too.
