What's wrong with asking for annual income? I earn 50k a year and I do own a car, fully paid for thank you very much. Even on my mediocre salary I cannot afford to buy a brand new flash car.

    See the reasons given above.

50K is not a mediocre salary, it's more than double the national average so is actually a 'good' salary. You must have quite a good job, what is it this time? Still a 'Big 4 graduate management consultant'? Or are you an astronaut now? Or a fighter pilot?

No, I'm a senior associate for a Deloitte now. Finished my CIMA exams finally. Also, I will show a picture of the custard and todays newspaper very soon, hopefully by tomorrow.

So can you add your most recent payslip to the promised custard shot please?

We all know that you won't though!

I thought to add my story.

I bought my Fiesta 6-years ago when it had 15k on the clock and I paid cash for it. It's now on 76500 miles and it's been completely and utterly reliable (apart from both window regulators failing - common faults on older Fiestas). It's also been in 2 non-fault incidents: rear-ended at a pedestrian crossing in 2012 and front-ended when parked (on Christmas Day, of all days!) in 2015. It was repaired as-good-as-new and put back on the road. It recently flew through its MOT - only needs 2 front tyres as they're currently on 3mm.

I suppose my story is similar to PasturesNew's. I could buy a new car for cash but my Fiesta does the job I need it to, it's comfortable and really cheap to run. I prefer to have my savings and spend my money on other things :)

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I hate it when people say: 'I drive a cheap car because I don't care what other people think and I would rather spend my money elsewhere'. You drive a cheap car because you can't afford a nice car, simple as.

Its amazing how narrow minded some people are.

Exactly that. One of the richest people I've done work for, whose net worth runs to nine figures, was driving a 1989 G Reg Volvo 740 last time I saw him about twelve months ago.

The other day I thought about entering the X-Factor comp to win the £35k BMW X5 M and then almost immediately I was wondering if they'd give me the money instead or whether i'd have to find a way to sell it.

£28k would be nice and handy to kit out my double garage with a 4 post ramp, a nice lathe, a floor standing pillar drill, a milling machine, a CNC, a laser cutter, a brake press and slip roll, a nice TIG welder (and suitable electricity supply for it) some Makita power tools and some other nice kit.
All of which nobody will ever see, because I buy what I want for me, not what I think will make me look "upper middle class".

I wonder where they are getting an X5 M sport for 35K?

I would buy one at that price
