  • Sorry to hear that, what awful news :(. I hope he gets another job quickly. Obviously that job wasn't right for him, so hopefully he will find a job that's made for him sooner rather than later.

Hope hes not knocked sideways with the shock of it all. Let us know if there is anything practical we can do to help.

    Love and hugs

Thanks for all your lovely comments and support.

The MD gave some wishy washy reasons but said it had come from above (family owned business). DH doesn't think the MD had any say in it. DH is not local to the small town he works in and it is very clicky, even the customers think it should be local jobs for local people. He still has use of his company car, a great reference and severance pay.

He is actually very calm and accepting of it and feels it is an opportunity really as the bonus structure was not what he was promised, he hated the long commute and wont miss working in that town plus it was costing us a fortune in fuel. He has made a few calls but will have the BH weekend off before starting job hunting next week. He will also get to spend some time with DS who is on half term next week and look after him the week I am away with the girls.

I am not sure it has quite sunk in yet though as he keeps talking about the work he can do in the house and garden and he can get to the gym etc. like he was going to be on holiday. He has never had to job hunt before so the reality of it will take a while to sink in.

The mortgage will go up about £120/month from 1st July when we go on SVR and we have agreed that he needs to have something sorted by the end of July even if he starts it August as we can just about scrape through August but come September we will be in a pickle but I am confident he will be sorted before then.

The good news is we sold DS bike so that is £150 in the pot. 2 of the items of clothing I bought with my personal spends will be returned this weekend.

The re-mortgage has been cancelled and I have the annual insurance to pay today. We hadn't actually booked the gite for our holiday and, if we can afford it, will just go stay with relatives instead and have a shorter holiday. We haven't actually spent any money on the holiday as yet so if we don't go nothing is wasted.

My DH worked as a contractor for many years. Because he speaks a foreign language fluently he was based on the mainland for years. When DS started to assert his teenage self we made the decision DH would base himself in UK. This was great until the work dried up and I helpfully said, "what do you really want to do?" - two years of him eking out a living, selling kitchens and doing unskilled work and he was a fully qualified teacher. He loves it. The money is (even today) about half what he was earning when contracting but we manage. Our profile shifted, our retirement pushed back a bit but we adjusted. And he is happy.

If your DH was not happy it was not right. We spend a lot of time compromising in life. Maybe there is an opportunity here for you (both). Chin up girl.

So sorry to hear about DH.

I used to do a long commute & when you take in to account fuel costs, wear and tear, servicing, replacing the vehicle etc you can actually take a more local job on a lower salary without finances being hugely impacted.

Also you can't put a price on the extra time at home!

Good luck to him with his search
