The problem is we work full time so can't go out as soon as the bin men have been. I leave the house at 5 in the morning and don't get back until gone 3pm when everyone has taken their bins back. My partner isn't back until half 4 either. I don't see why we should pay if someone has stolen our bin.

People steal things. You can't expect the manufacturer or the council to replace stuff.
If a plant was stolen from your garden, would you expect the garden centre to replace it?
Or if a bike was stolen would you ask Halfords to give you a new one?

Your bin was stolen. You either get it back, or you buy a new one.

But the council make it necessary for you to leave your bin vulnerable to theft for hours and hours every week! It's not like you can take responsibility for security and lock them up somehow line you can with a bike or a garden, our binmen won't even empty bins that are left out with the handles facing the wrong way or with the lid not 100% closed!

I have no idea where it is appropriate to post this but, one of our neighbors stole our black bin the week before last.

Americans! You can't trust any of them.

We had a very large family move in further up the lane. They seemed to think it was their god given right to have more bins because there were more of them, but not pay for them, of course. (and parking - don't get me started on their approach to parking - your driveway empty? - yup, fair game and when you ask them to move 'it was only for a second - god you lot are SO sensitive' ugh)

In a lane where everyone got on really well and we had no problems before we suddenly had a spate of bin thefts. Whereas the large family seemed to suddenly get 'new' fully covered bins (those big coloured transfers that handily would cover any previous markings)

Residents were upset when we realised that the cost to replace the missing bins were so high. We all got crime numbers and luckily, as there were five missing in total, the council replaced ours for free. They did say they It was a one off and they wouldn't do it again though.

My lovely elderly neighbour took great delight in returning all the bins to their respective houses on bin day to ensure they didn't get to repeat the theft.

Weirdly however the large families bins always went missing on bin day. Every.single.week.

They got most irate at everyone on the lane. happened every week for quite a while. People amaze me, happily appropriate from everyone else but squeal about how awful they are being treated when it happens back......
Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...

Wheelie bins do get eaten by the truck, I've seen it happen twice, makes a horrible grinding/grating sound. Neither time did the bin men appear remotely bothered and just carried on (obviously they can't retrieve the bits, but they could put a note through the door explaining what happened). Both times, I told my neighbours who had to really argue with the council to get a free replacement - basically if they didn't have a witness, the council would have charged them. So don't assume it's been stolen!

    That's a rubbish suggestion

I would print some flyers with a photo of your bin on them and tie them onto nearby lamp posts:

"MISSING. One black bin. No distinguishing marks. Last seen on (date). Answers to name of (suitable bin name). If found, please return to Number X."

I hope you get your bin back.

^^^This. Also, if the council REQUIRE you to have one, then I think they should replace them, especially as Red Squirrel points out, they need to be left in the street for god knows how long before they get collected.

Our council don't use wheely bins, so it's no longer an issue for us luckily.

I'm sorry that your bin has been stolen - it's extremely aggravating (I've had my garden waste bags pinched in the past and had to replace them myself) - but I'm puzzled as to why shouldn't you replace the bin yourselves? If someone has stolen your car - do you not have to replace that yourselves?

No of course not, the insurance company would replace it.
