Travel money stolen from luggage

First time posting, apologies if this has come up before...I looked but couldn't spot anything.
As we're boarding our outbound flight to Prague (literally walking across the tarmac) we were advised that there was not enough room in the cabin for anymore hand luggage and therefore our baggage had to be carried in the hold. When we arrive at our destination, we notice our entertainment kitty had been stolen which was around £1,200 worth of Czech Koruna.
We tried to report it to airport police who said as its a theft it needs to be reported to the Czech state police. The state police advised it happened in an airport therefore its not their responsibility. When raised with Menzies (the company responsible for the baggage handling) & Easyjet we were pointed to the Easyjet's T&Cs which state that no money should be stored in the hold luggage.
Does the use of T&Cs just relinquish all responsibility for what is a criminal act?
The flight had been oversold and the checks around hand luggage couldn't have been followed otherwise we wouldn't have had to place our bags into the hold.
Where can we go from here? Is there a regulator? Any advice would be welcome.

I am not sure you have any comeback now, others may be able to help.
BUT why would you leave money in the hold.
I would never put money, credit cards, passport etc in the hold.
I have been in a position exactly like yours where they have taken my cabin bag off me at the bottom of the steps, I then take out my smaller wallet that holds all things personal (as mentioned) and carry that on board0 -

Have you asked your insurance company what info they need0

My view is you're stuffed.
And even if you have insurance it won't cover that amount in cash and it won't cover your negligence.
For future:
1) Get a Halifax Clarity card or similar and consider travelling with little or no cash.

2) Have a bag within a bag for hand luggage so that if this scenario reoccurs you can remove the small bag with cash, medication, passports etc as soon as the request comes in.0 -

Do not take this the wrong way but if everyone said " i have had x amount stolen from my case whilst in the hold " can you image the payouts from the airlines! it would never happen.
Your money and personel belongings should be carried in person,if your suitecase went mising or was delayed for a week at least you would have money to enjoy your holiday and a passport to return home.0 -

While I've every sympathy for you I think you're going to learn a hard lesson.
Of course try your insurance company.
I was in Prague last month and we only took £50 of currency to get us started. Then we used cards or changed sterling.
Next time you travel, come on here and ask advice about currency and packing before you go.
Sorry.:(

It's for this reason that I always carry my jewellery in my hand luggage when I fly. Even got redressed when I realised OH had put them in the suitcase on our last fly/cruise0

The theft could have occurred at Prague on arrival, or more likely when your bag was being stowed in the hold at your departure airport. You could report it there but it won't get your money back.
It's well known that all airport baggage handlers are potential thieves, and the last few excess cabin bags possibly containing carelessly left valuables arriving into the privacy of the aircraft hold is an ideal opportunity.
The other lesson is to have suitable cards for travel in your pocket, instead of carrying more expensively bought and vulnerable cash.
Better luck next time..!Evolution, not revolution0 -
