It's all very well say that you should keep somethings so they are easy to get out of the hand luggage if this happens but if it's the first time it has happened the OP wouldn't have known about it and when they come up and say that you need to put it in the hold you are taken by surprise and just give it to them. It happened to me like that and then I was worried all the flight 'cos I realized what I had done, but I was lucky.

It's for this reason that I always carry my jewellery in my hand luggage when I fly. Even got redressed when I realised OH had put them in the suitcase on our last fly/cruise

Sorry i do not understand this,do you mean that you claimed for missing jewellery even though it was in your suitcase?

I think she meant re-dressed (as in, dressed again, perhaps wearing the jewellery) rather than redress-ed (as in, got redress).

    D'oh!

Having packed the suitcase on our last night of the cruise (as you put the suitcase outside your cabin for the stewards to collect) we were getting into bed when I asked hubby where he'd put my jewellery. He told me the suitcase so I git redressed so I could get my suitcase from outside.

He thought I was ott but I wanted my jewellery with me
  • I do think there is a wider issue here, its that of hand luggage size.

I travelled long haul recently and the amount of people who carry on mini suitcases is unreal and many people had nowhere for their carry ons. Hand luggage should just be for personal valuables, medication and a few other small items. Whilst it doesnt help the OP, I think the airlines as a group need to restrict the sie of hand luggage in order to address this problem.

If people want to take more clothes and such, they should have to put in their suitcase and pay the extra expense.

I so agree with this but hasn't one US airline started charging for these cabin luggage?
  • It was in their hand luggage

I got the impression that whilst it was in their hand luggage the luggage was more like a cabin sized suitcase rather than a handbag

But the OP would have had time to remove their passport and boarding card-so why not the cash too? I can understand how it might get momentarily forgotten in these circumstances, but the liability remains with the OP and no-one else.
Even if it was covered by insurance, then there is no way of proving the loss.

That is ok if they put the luggage on the plane!
Twice already this year I have arrived at my destination with no suitcase! Once was long haul, the other a very short Aer Lingus flight where I paid for a suitcase.

    Maybe, maybe not.
Whenever I travel, my passport and boarding pass (if not on my phone) is always carried on my person in an inside jacket pocket so it's possible this was the case with the OP.

not exactly on topic but a few months ago didn't the aircrew basically have to throw people off the plane in an emergency as people were faffing about trying to get stuff out of their hand luggage?

At the time I remember listening to one expert who said he puts his passport, keys, phone & a credit card (so in this case the money as well) into a plastic bag and he put it he bag nto the seat pouch. Then, if there was an emergency he could just grap it & he'd have the essentials with him.
