I was wondering do banks atms and the self service machines like at Barclays read a cards magnetic strip or the chip on the front of the card?

Chip is the first read.0

The PIN is stored on the chip.I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0

There is talk of ATMs outside stores etc being closed down, to cut costs.0

The reason i asked was i was in a shop today and placed my rucksack which had my wallet inside on the detagger magnet. It was only for about 3-4 seconds and i had heard about demagnetisation0

At the risk of stating the obvious, why not try a token £10 ATM withdrawal (or statement request, etc) anyway, just to reassure yourself that your card is still working?0

Yes i am planning on trying that tomorrow. Im probably worrying over nothing0

The chip will be fine, don't worry. The reason i asked was i was in a shop today and placed my rucksack which had my wallet inside on the detagger magnet. It was only for about 3-4 seconds and i had heard about demagnetisationI came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0 -
ATMs read the chip for the pin number and the magnetic stripe to read the details of the account.
You can find that you cant use the card in a ATM but you can in shops, as they read the chip and the cashpoints read the magnetic strip.
It allows you to unblock pins on ATM's where you have blocked the sim, (like a phone chip)
It relation to demagnetisation I would assume that you will be okay for the time that you said.
I would try to get a mini statement out of the ATM to check things are still okay, but I wouldn't try the chip or contactless as that can still work even after the magnetic strip has failed or is scratched.
Hope all is okay and your card is working, in time for the BH weekend.

I'd be surprised if an ATM looks at the magnetic stripe on a chip+pin card - all the data it needs is on the chip. If you think about it, retail chip+pin readers know all the details about where to route the payment and do that just reading the chip. The strip reader is there on the ATM to support legacy and some international cards that don't have a chip.ATMs read the chip for the pin number and the magnetic stripe to read
I have heard of folks that take a strong magnet to their strip to help prevent cloning! OK so long as you don't plan to travel too far internationally.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Credit Cards, Savings & investments, and Budgeting & Bank Accounts boards.
