    If you can compromise on thinness for some durability, a Lenovo Ideapad 110 might fit the bill. (because on a tight budget, cheap repairs are nice)
    Also consider the ASUS P-Series P2540ua-ASB51 Laptop which is as cheap as la:money:ptops go and is new at the downside of being cheap from the get-go.
    Although at under $500, we're entering the bottom of the bargain bin zone so there's going to be compromise. Although your usage should be served reasonably well by any decent PC from the last several years.
