If they are going to post spam they might want to check that their security ticket has not been revoked

Might want to change their number too as reports online of their scams

I've been using Puppy for years as a bootable, fast, VERY lightweight OS, great for troubleshooting and data recovery from a duff windows machine....it will cope perfectly for the tasks listed in the OP.....

.....and the desktop wallpaper is soooo cute ;):):D

Thanks for that. For me it was limited as at that time did not support NTFS, so no disk troubleshooting. For 95% of kids, oap's and some adults, would be ideal, especially on a cd as you get no virus, no spyware etc, no problems, just a degraded cd every few years.

Why don't you recommend your friend getting a mini-laptop by HP or Dell they are good place saving gadgets and work great with the purpose you have mentioned.

...Also got it on an XBoot build on a USB stick ;) (tagging dcm and spud ;) )

Thanks I had never heard from Linux Mint before, except for on this forum!!!

Actually I am going to see if I can put it on a tiny atom based Aspire KV60I am trying to make useful for a donation.

Hi, glad to hear your interest

LinuxMint is the most poplar GNU/Linux Distribution, according to distrowatch, LinuxMint sticks to traditional desktop, user interface.

    https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=popularity

The things Windows (and Mac) users need to understand is that Linux Desktop environment is far more flexible and independently developed. LinuxMint has four Desktop version, (Cinnamon, MATE, xfce. KDE)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment

Some Desktop Environment (X windows) needs more CPU power and memory.

Cinnamon, KDE use 3D acceleration with more memory use in general. not recommend for less powerful computer such as netbook. (MATE, xfce is good at less powerful hardware)

    https://l3net.wordpress.com/2013/04/09/a-memory-comparison-of-light-linux-desktops-part-2/

I am too lazy to do extra work during OS installation, (find drivers, never ending windows update, installing various software it would take up to 6-8 hours) LinuxMint install almost every application you would need along with OS installation itself within 20min or so.

Aspire KV60 (I have assumed KV60 is the same as D250)

According to the user report, D250 is compatible with older LinuxMint. (Unlike Windows, Linux is very likely to work with later version as they have no commercial interest to stop support the existing working hardware)

    https://community.linuxmint.com/hardware

I would commander Linux Mate 18 32bit for Aspire KV60. I have very similar notebook Toshiba NB200 with 1GB, 160GB, Atom N280, the CPU of which is painfully slow. I don't want to spend this notebook for a penny lol. (great comment for moneysaving site! Respect! lol) I Just installed LinuxMint, it is far more usable than even Windows xp/ 7

Initial memory usage of LinuxMint Mate is around 250MB, not super-light but looks elegant user friendly look. Windows XP 500-600MB, Windows 7, 800-1200MB), With 1GB, your notebook will be usable with LinuxMInt Mate again.

As some suggested, there are many great Linux Distribution, You may find your own favorite distribution by yourself. (LinuxMint would be a good start point.)

I hope some of you would be more interested in Linux and have a some hands on experience. It is easy and fun.

    Enjoy Linux computing :)

P.S. I have no intention to play with OS sectarian wars. Apart from Toshiba netbook, all of my computers are windows 7 /LinuxMint Dualboot (I have a Windows7/10/LinuxMint tripleboot notebook for support reason)

As they only need it for browsing I think I am going to go for the lightest and fastest loading and fastest working Linux I can find.

Do not need four desktops and all the other bloat, I may even have it load a browser on startup

I will stick opera and/or firefox on there

I will add links in toolbar to online office and google docs

That is it, it is all they need.

I think I will install a dual boot, Puppy and Mint, see which is faster and more practical

No, I don't mean it, You can choose one of 4 desktop versions.

    https://linuxmint.com/release.php?id=28

Then I explained Cinnamon and KDE is rather heavy, and MATE and Xfce is lightweight.

Yes, this is a good idea! but if you download LinuxMint, Try MATE 32BIT or Xfce 32BIT. (Cinnamon /KDE is unusable for netbook) Puppy is super-light and minimum installation. There are many lightweight distribution. Enjoy!
