Premium diesel in fairly old engine?
Comments
-
My girl is 2 years old, done 60,000, been oil changed every 15,000 (Skoda says 40k?) and only ever had Shell or BP fuel.
replaced 4 tyres at 33,000, still on factory brakes.

No mission - not in a million years is the service interval on your diesel Skoda 40,000 miles.0 -
I guess different engines can handle things, some can, some can't. I don't use premium fuels, on an Astra diesel I got engine management lights after about 15k because of egr valve and dpf issues, same fuels same driving style on a Saab and I'm on 50k and no issues. I do use recommended oils, on the Astra it was a GM oil, on the Saab I use Mobil1 0w40. I dont regularly put additives in but I do occasionally throw a measure of Redex in. I admit I don't know if it makes any difference whatsoever.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0

My EGR valve may need seeing to as I do have a coil light that comes on and stays on (until it's cleared) causing starting issues but that's another topic. I did consider commercial EGR valve cleaners too but just thought I'd aim to try and clean the injectors now at this mileage (and get the fuel filter changed asap). I get the oil and filter changed with the MOT every July which works out around the manufacturer's recommended mileage.
£20 of diesel can get me between about 175 and 210 miles, I think I worked it out around 60mpg or so which is close enough to the 65mpg that is listed for my car so quite happy really.0 -

Different engines, different requirements, different years presumably?
Keep them well serviced and a decent fuel / fuel additive and hope for the best. Thats my belief anyway....0 -
Astra was FH07LTE if someone still has it or knows what became of it, Saab is a 59 plate and still going strong.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0

I have never used additives in any of my cars - although I only run cars for about 5 years (max 60K miles). During the service the dealer once tried to sell me an engine clean (I think it was £27) but since they could not provide any evidence from the manufacturer that it was a recommended procedure we agreed that it was an unnecessary expense.
Maybe the additives do something for older cars but at the minute I still consider them to be from the 'snake oil' shelf (but then I am not a mechanic)IITYYHTBMAD0 -

Question:
How frequently should I get my car serviced?
Answer:
The service requirements will vary depending upon the model and engine. Fabia Models require a lubrication service at 10,000 miles and an inspection at 20,000 miles or 12 months whichever is sooner. All Octavia and Superb Models can operate on either a fixed or a variable servicing regime. On Variable servicing, intervalls are determined by driving styles and conditions of use. The on-board computer will indicate when a service is required which could be up to approx. 20,000 miles for petrol engines, 30,000 miles for 4 cylinder diesel and 24,000 miles for V6 Diesel. Further information may be found in the Service Schedule contained within the vehicle document wallet or by contacting your local retailer. To find your local retailer please select the retailer locator tab from the home page of this site.0 -

But there is nothing in that post that comes anywhere close to the 40k miles that you referred to earlier.
"up to 30,000 miles is a lot different to saying that "Skoda say 40k"maxmycardagain wrote: »been oil changed every 15,000 (Skoda says 40k?) and only ever had Shell or BP fuel.0
