Premium diesel in fairly old engine?

Hi all,

I put £20 of Shell V-Power Nitro into my 133k diesel clio a couple of weeks ago to hopefully give it a bit of a clean out, especially the injectors. The fuel economy seems to balance out a bit as although it's 12p a litre more I'm still getting about the same number of miles for the money as such.
I've used Redex before and know the feedback on that and other stuff is variable but what worried me is that I know older cars sometimes rely more on the 'sludge' in the engine as such and by cleaning that out it can be more harmful?

Can anyone advise before I put another half a tankful of v-power nitro in?

The only thing it'll do for you is, as you say give everything a clean out, however you'd need more than one tankful to achieve this. Personally on a 133K mileage Clio I wouldn't bother.

Just keep using it, can`t buy better than Shell V-Power there will be some deposits in a 133k motor if its never had any cleaners through the system.

£20 worth = pointless. There will be a tiny amount of additives in that amount it wont do anything. About 15L @ £1.30 a litre?

That was more of an experiment to see if there might be any difference at all but was planning to chuck in a fair amount more if it was worth it or if I might see any benefit without any harm to an older engine.

If you want to clean the injectors you want an additive in the oil not the fuel

Which vehicles have you worked on which have injectors with a separate supply of lubricating oil?

Op wants to clean his engine of sludge. If injectors are full of sludge it won't be running right so obviously not an issue

I've used Millers diesel additive in the past and have been very happy with it.

It gives you all the additives - and more - and works out at a fraction of the price of the extra for premium fuel.
