Hi all I have an old laptop running vista which I reinstalled last week now it's struggling even more than it was before mainly because it does not do updates any more, I was wondering whether the laptop would be powerful enough to run Windows 7, which I have installation discs for, the current spec is Intel core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5250 @1.5GHz 2Gb of ram, many thanks

As a general rule 7 is happier than Vista so the machine should perform better.
That being said, look up the laptop model on the manufacturer's website and check for driver availability first.0 -
Someone will tell you to get an SSD soon They can be installed in the CD/DVD with a £6 Caddy off ebay/
I find that 4gb is the minimum memory if you want to actually run apps.
Do you have the laptop model?
I agree Win7 COA £5 then download ISOThanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !0 -

This ten year old Acer Aspire 5100 has run the gamut from XP to Windows 10.
Now running Windows 10 Professional 32 bit.
Perfectly usable for surfing the Internet
Your CPU has a lower rating, but still a dual core. Should be ok..0 -
Don't think about paying a fiver for a key without a COA, the same product is available via the same channel for half that price.....and the Admin edits here are getting totally ridiculous.0

Thanks for reply so far,I have been to the manufactorers website, and they appear to do only drivers up to vista or Xp,my question now is if I load Windows 7 or any thing else, would I be able to get drivers for the laptop, I must add the laptop is a Medion MD 96350, brought from Aldi many years ago, I'm loathe to spend money on a new one as my wife uses it just for the Internet, Facebook and emails, so it really does not get used for anything major, thanks0

The do have Drivers for Windows 7 on this website.
Do you intend to run a clean install or an upgrade?0 -

That machine looks as if it has been upgraded to max memory, but I think it will be fine for just browsing. If you find it unusable you can install a lite version of Linux.
For reference purposes
This page shows upgrade options.

Although contrary to link above it seems that the CPU could be swapped out
I have seen this type on many systems, all you is turn this screw and swap out the CPU taking care to match the gold mark at bottom left
Looking at firmware for your machine you could use this T9500 at £30, it is 2nd hand so should not incur import duty but to be certain getting this T9300 for £15 will keep you under custom value limit

If you are just browsing you may find you are fine without these upgrades.
BTW Link for downloads does not seem to have any for win7, in my experience most Vista drivers like these will work with Win7, there are actually two pages of drivers both seem to be limited to vista and XP

What is going on here? That laptop doesn't max out at 2GB of RAM. Will accept 4GB at least.
Windows 7 and beyond Drivers are here
Not all are up to date, but updated are easily found or likely to be installed during the install of the OS.0 -
hi NiftyDigits, thanks for helping me, I've looked at the driver site you supplied (thanks again), I take it I just download the required drivers or do I download all of them? also yes it will be a clean install0

Wait until after the install in order to see what is missing. Then just install what you need to install. We can check via Hardware ID for anything not working or listed.0
