Hi all - just to say I am back from my mum's; she said thanks for all the 'happy birthdays' but she couldn't understand all the different names we've all got! I am now going to settle down because my head is all bunged up with this cold and I'm starting to feel sorry for myself. I know I shouldn't because others on here are suffering all the time. (((hugs))) to everyone - it seems a lot of people are in need lately. 'Ouch' to ODDS'S DH - I did try not to laugh, honest! Well, I'm off because I can't keep my head up any more!
See you all tomorrow - when I hope to feeling much better!

Maybe "sweet and spicy" would be more appealing?
Made saute potatoes, asparagus and had home made multi grain tiny bread rolls with it. Used my new silicone muffin tray for the first time.
DD ( who has just decided she does not like potatoes ) seemed to have no trouble scoffing them!
Very quiet here as one daughter has gone to London today and another has just started university."This site is addictive!"

Hi
Skimming a bit over thread - but I like to have a look in and see what everyone is doing sometimes. It never ceases to astonish me the sheer courage a lot of people show in just continuing with their "normal everyday lives" - I couldnt do it myself - honest - but I "take my hat off" to some of the people I see posting on here.
As far as I got through the thread (and apologies to any I have missed that I shouldnt);
HATS OFF TODAY TO;

I apologise to anyone else who has been having a hard time of it - and I didnt get that far in the thread.
I know we should just think of the stuff that happens to us as "challenges" - my mother said to me once "all character-strengthening - do I need any more character-strengthening?!!!"
My personal theme I am thinking along for today is the juxtaposition between ordinary everyday dilemmas in our own personal life and "the bigger picture" (ie what is happening in the world at large). Not an easy balance to maintain I find personally - "doing my tiny bit" as regards the world at large and then coming back to "chop wood/wash dishes" - ie the everyday stuff we all have to do (put in 21st century language) - "Do the important stuff - then make sure you can pay the fuel bill and then do the washing-up". Now - why is it that one begins to feel a bit schizophrenic at times - trying to balance the "important stuff" with one's own personal life? Tell me about it!
Today's/this week's "important stuff" being what is happening in Burma of course - I am a non-political person, but I am watching developments with interest - and horror. I think it is appalling to see Buddhist monks beaten up/killed and their monasteries violated - and I can thoroughly understand why "the ordinary person in the street" is trying to protect them. I have been shaking and crying watching this - I am appalled. But then I must "do my tiny bit" - so I found an absolutely perfect card in Tesco today - as in a condolence card to send the Ambassador at the Burmese Embassy in London - a "compassion card", as I have renamed it. It was just a simple card with lotus on front (Buddhist symbol) and words "Thinking of you" inside. I sent it with my comment about sincere condolences to those people in Burma who have been killed by the soldiers employed by the Burmese government and my comment "Crying for Burma". What more can I do? - But I "did my little bit". These are a devout, peaceful, Buddhist people - so I am trying in my own tiny way to find a suitable devout/peaceful/Buddhist response to their situation. The last thing we want is a Western country or two going into this country trying to impose a military solution on this situation. Please pray/send positive wishes to the Burmese people.0 -
What a thoughtful post, Ceridwen. Thanks.
Nearly the end of the day, and will be glad when it ends as it seems to have been one thing after another. Supermarket went ok - £150 for the second week, which is a lot for others but a lot down on what it was. In a couple of weeks I'll make more cutbacks. Then I had some shopping to do. We are trying to get curtains, etc, for the new house (we move in 3 weeks) and it is a bit of a challenge as there are three 3.5m windows. I got some for the playroom on ebay yesterday for £30 something, and then today in Keighley I got two sets for the main bedroom at £15 each. Brand new. It's possible they are too short - I haven't been able to get measurements - but I have a plan. Three curtains will cover the window if need be, so I can then chop the last one into three and lengthen the others. Add a pretty trim over the join (they are plain choccy brown with duck egg velvet trim) and bob's your uncle.
I did get a new duvet cover to go with them as they don't go with anything else we have but the total was still less than I had budgeted for, so that's ok. I think I can now justify the headboard I want. It's hard reading in bed without a headboard. Also got curtain for DD's room for £5 - including postage! So far, so good. Flexibility on colour/style essential to get bargains, but once I did that there were heaps of bargains.
Watched the end of Wales-Fiji. Delighted at result despite being part Welsh. The PI teams have made huge improvements in this World Cup (well, except for Samoa, not sure what's going on there). Didn't bother to watch ABs beat Romania. It isn't entertainment when there is such a mismatch.
Made toad in the hole for tea. DS now eating his, he didn't come down from the computer for a while. We don't make a fuss since he is very fat and missing a meal isn't a bad thing. Right now he is dancing to Mozart's Requiem in between mouthfuls.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -

Oh, and in the spirit of household disasters: I nearly had to ask how to remove nail polish from lips! DD asked to have her nails done. I gave in. Put the bottle on the bench. Should have watched DS. He used it to colour his lips a pretty pink. Got there fast with a cloth and I think we got it all off without any harm done. But eeeekkkk. Nearly a casulty trip.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

if you go to sites like quidco and then visit other websites from there you can earn 10p or so a day for each website you visit. usually shopping search sites like kelkoo. it can mount up if you do it regular. you have to watch you are not seen to be abusing the "system". other sites like pigsback you collect points which you can turn into vouchers etc.
there's threads about how to do it somewhere...try search box.
