Diets in general are horrific for most ! As straight away you feel restricted.

If you truly want to lose weight start small. Don't buy white bread buy wholemeal. Try swapping it cutting down fizzy drinks for sparkling flavoured water. If you eat crisps/ biscuits buy lower fat and stick to one pack and 1 treat per day. Eat dinners as normal but add more veg to the plate or salad and gradually cut down portion sizes.

Instead of driving to shop etc, walk. Put some music on in the house while cleaning, get some movement going. Even if it's only 4 songs !!

These little changes require hardly any effort and you can get results. That just might then spur you on if you see changes.

However I got the impression you don't actually want to lose the weight, it's more for other people's benefit. Which is no good, it's your life if your ok being that size then so be it forget other people's opinions. If you do then good luck.

I am the heaviest I have ever been, the night I met my husband I was in a size 6 top and 8 jeans and now I'm more a 12/14.

I am uncomfortable with my weight but haven't yet got my motivation to lose it. I did lose a couple of stone a couple of years back but put it back on again.

I am currently just cutting down on treats, I've stopped buying biscuits and cakes and am going for a walk daily. Small changes but I'm not ready to go on a full on diet at the moment.

Start small, aim to lose half a stone and when you achieve that it will likely motivate you to lose more.
  • do you have any friends that would sign up to go with you? Me and my friends go as a group and it helps motivate getting there and makes it more fun if you have someone to have a laugh with at the same time!

signing up to the classes really helps me - no way i would stay in the gym for an hour otherwise. But i really enjoy cycling so spin classes are fun for me. Maybe you need to find a class that fits with you?

Thanks everyone. Its very interesting to see how my situation is interpreted. The feeling that my mum is ashamed / embarrassed hurts me more than the actual weight, that's true. She also criticises my housework ( lack of). I personally don't see my house as messy, but when my mum comes over I often see her looking disapprovingly at things. If I go upstairs to get something or go to the loo etc she will start tidying things. She sees it as helpful but I see it as another sign I'm not good enough. Same with the fact we rent a house and don't own one. Constantly being told to hurry up and buy / save for deposit / not get too comfortable here as its not permanent...
I feel sad saying this as we get on really well and my mum is so caring and helpful and has the best of intentions. I know her own mum was quite negative so maybe its just how she is! I have no siblings to compare stories!
I do believe I know what to do with eating. The NHS plan did work, I just found it hard to keep up. I like the idea of not thinking of it as 5 stone but smaller targets and I also agree it needs to be a lifestyle change not a 'diet'.
I do also want to lose weight for my health. I've already had my gallbladder out which may well have been related to poor diet and my grandad had a heart attack at 52. Another reason why I think my mum is so worried.
At 20 this wouldn't have happened as I was bothered about appearance, where as now I'm really not. I am honestly more comfortable in a swimsuit now at size 16/18 than when I was a size 10. Strange.

12/14 is 'normal' isn't it? Especially as we get older.

But as you say, it's not just about being bothered about appearance, it's the health side of it.

Separate out your relationship with your mother.

The thing that has helped me and my husband the most is MyFitnessPal coupled with a FitBit. The "secret" is to log absolutely everything you eat, from the milk in your tea to the ketchup on your chips. The MyFitnessPal app makes this relatively easy - you can scan barcodes and make recipes for meals, and copy entries from precious days, or from other people in your household. Just the act of logging your calorie intake makes you more aware of what you're eating, and encourages you to think about what you should be eating or not.

And the Fitbit or similar encourages you to be a bit more active - turning your step count into a "game" where you want to do a little better than the previous day.

My husband has managed to lose a few stone and become much fitter - he always struggled with exercise because he has had a knee replacement, but after upping his exercise and thinking about his diet he is now able to walk several miles a day without pain.

Thanks guys. I can see there are a number of new / better habits I could adopt. I do need to be more active. I started couch to 5 k and impressed myself by doing better than I thought possible but then got bored and haven't been out in about 4 weeks now. Typical me just don't see anything through.

It apparently takes about 2 months to make a habit - so stick at it. Was there a particular reason you got bored of the running? Could you maybe find a local running group to go with - then it's a commitment each week, too.
