Another hurdle. When signing up through UK power it says I chose to pay on direct debit when I don't want to and theres no way to change it:

'You have chosen to pay by Direct Debit. In order for E.ON to set up your Direct Debit payment, please complete your bank/building society account details.'

I always like to give meter readings after receiving my bill, then getting the bill amended and paying in (the much cheaper amount) manually. Do these comparison websites put you on direct debit automatically for any reason?

ok thanks gsmlnx. I don't mind paying Direct debit if I can give a meter reading before the bill is estimated. Otherwise if they overcharge me on my first bill and I gave a meter reading after that, would they amend the next estimated bill by taking into account I paid more on the previous bill?

Me again icicat. As gsmlnx says, our Saver Fixed 1 Year version 9 tariff has payment by Monthly Direct Debit and online management/paperless billing as part of the terms and conditions. Thought it might help to give you a bit of information about a couple of other things on our website that gsmlnx mentions.

The Real Time Billing service lets you check the account balance at any given time or even issue your own bills. Just pop in meter readings and you'll have the option of seeing the balance that would result or actually issue a bill to these readings.

There's the Direct Debit Manager too. This lets you make changes to the monthly payments to better suit different circumstances.

Provided the account is billed up to the latest meter readings, payments can be changed by up to 20 per cent up or down. By up to 5 per cent up or down without readings. Before confirming the new amount, we'll let you know by how much we think the account will be in credit/debit by the time of the annual review if the payments are changed but usage doesn't alter as expected.

Our aim with these payment arrangements is for accounts to have as near as possible to a zero balance at the annual review. If you should finish up in credit at the annual review, anything over a fiver is automatically refunded to your bank. There's more information about this and the Direct Debit Manager on our website.

Once you switch to any of our fixed tariffs, we guarantee not to change the unit prices or daily standing charges for the duration of the agreement. If you wish, you can also switch to another of our tariffs without picking up an exit fee. Exit fees don't apply when switching from one E.ON tariff to another. They only apply when changing tariff outside of the renewal period.

Hope this is of interest icicat.

It is the tariff that demands direct debit not the switching website.
Try the Citizens Advice Bureau website at https://energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk/ and click on "pay when you receive the bill" to get a list of tariffs that suit you.
Be warned that the results page will say at the top that you can get a cheaper deal and by how much by paying by direct debit.
All energy fixes are cheaper if using direct debit to pay for them.

With E.ON you can give them weekly readings if you want to and ask for a bill at anytime. You can also vary the direct debit yourself via the website within reason (the system tells you what the limits are when you use it).
I give them monthly readings and generate a bill every few months. I've also tweaked my DD too to get a better balance on the account (better as in matching my current usage and not building up a stupid sized credit.

Yes E.ON will send reminder emails every quarter asking for a reading but as I said there is nothing stopping you doing it your way and adding a reading as you want.
Also when you log onto the E.On account, there is a reminder asking for a reading if you are within the quarterly reading time frame, which goes away after you've added one.

Spot on advice gsmlnx. Thanks for that. Glad you're finding some of our online services useful. The Direct Debit Manager and Real Time Billing are great ways to make sure your account is on track.

Also pleased you find the email and website reminders asking for readings when a bill is due of benefit.
