Another hurdle. When signing up through UK power it says I chose to pay on direct debit when I don't want to and theres no way to change it:

'You have chosen to pay by Direct Debit. In order for E.ON to set up your Direct Debit payment, please complete your bank/building society account details.'

I always like to give meter readings after receiving my bill, then getting the bill amended and paying in (the much cheaper amount) manually. Do these comparison websites put you on direct debit automatically for any reason?

It is the tariff that demands direct debit not the switching website.
Try the Citizens Advice Bureau website at https://energycompare.citizensadvice.org.uk/ and click on "pay when you receive the bill" to get a list of tariffs that suit you.
Be warned that the results page will say at the top that you can get a cheaper deal and by how much by paying by direct debit.
All energy fixes are cheaper if using direct debit to pay for them.

ok thanks gsmlnx. I don't mind paying Direct debit if I can give a meter reading before the bill is estimated. Otherwise if they overcharge me on my first bill and I gave a meter reading after that, would they amend the next estimated bill by taking into account I paid more on the previous bill?

With E.ON you can give them weekly readings if you want to and ask for a bill at anytime. You can also vary the direct debit yourself via the website within reason (the system tells you what the limits are when you use it).
I give them monthly readings and generate a bill every few months. I've also tweaked my DD too to get a better balance on the account (better as in matching my current usage and not building up a stupid sized credit.

Also guys, my dad was talking about the government plans to enforced fixed energy prices within the a week or two? So if I switched to another tariff that was fixed prices for a year, would the governments enforcement to lower prices have any effect on my fixed tariff? Or could I be stuck with actually paying a higher price for a whole year and not being able to opt out due to exit fees?

ok thanks for clearing that up gsmlnx, that does sound much better. My dad also said that eon send him an email reminding him to give a meter reading which is ideal :)

Yes E.ON will send reminder emails every quarter asking for a reading but as I said there is nothing stopping you doing it your way and adding a reading as you want.
Also when you log onto the E.On account, there is a reminder asking for a reading if you are within the quarterly reading time frame, which goes away after you've added one.

The Tory plans (there is a general election so it is just an idea for their party manifesto) are to put some sort of cap on energy prices but no-one (including them) know what or how or its effect on prices.
Don't worry about this idea as it may go away after the election and it will probably increase prices as energy companies will get rid of the cheap fixes to stay within the cap limits and to make sure that their profits do not go down. British Gas say this idea would increase prices for everyone !

footyguy, Malc, thanks for the replies.

Malc, thanks for the informative reply, I tried my best to understand it. So if I made the switch to E.On now what can I expect to happen when my tariff with EDF runs out at the end of the month? I'm guessing my electricity will switch over fine but not sure what happens with Gas. Will there be some sort of delay with the gas switch to EON resulting in me being automatically put on EDFs standard tariff? cheers

cheers btr30. Though not sure I understand about 'This would mean up to 20 more days of cheaper gas'? Wouldn't you be switched to edf standard tarrif whilst the switch to eon for gas is delayed?

Hello icicat and sorry for the late reply. Not been around since Saturday. Already some great advice on here. Thanks all.

To confirm, Project Nexus is only about the gas. The electricity switch won't be affected by this. Gas switches will be delayed whilst this changeover goes through.

I can't speak for other suppliers but, for customers switching away from us, we'll apply Price Protection to those on fixed tariffs provided the account is applied for within this window. If it is, we'll make sure accounts stay on the same prices up to the end date when the switch completes.

Hope this makes it a little clearer icicat. Come back to me if still unclear.

I switched from EDF to EON v9 on Friday. Marginal savings of £14 per annum over EDF blue fixed June 18, but with cashback of £38 with PowerUK comparison site on Quidco made it a viable change for me.
EDF tariff is slightly longer (13 months compared to 12), and doesn't have exit fees so not much in it either way.

From the EON representative description of project Nexus, I read, if the gas transfer is delayed you would remain on current tariff with EDF until completed, as long as completed within 20 days of the tariff end date i.e. 20 June,
This would mean up to 20 more days of cheaper gas.

    Hello btr30 and welcome aboard.

That's the way we would handle delays for customers moving away from us whilst on fixed tariffs and provided the account was applied for within the Price Protection window. It could, though, be longer than 20 days. As I say, provided the account is applied for within this window (open 49 calendar days before a tariff end date until 20 working days after), we'll keep customers on the cheaper prices right up until the account switches even if this is longer than 20 calendar days.

This is how we handle these cases btr30 but I can't speak for other suppliers. Hope it's useful. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

No, if you commence your switch within the switching window you will stay on you original fixed tariff if the switch date is delayed beyond the end of fix.

Spot on molerat. As above, we protect prices right up until the supply end date provided the account was applied for within the Price Protection window.
