How could choosing to pollute everyone else's air not be considered selfish? As well as the cost on the tax payer for the health problems.

True things often sound nasty to those that aren't interested in listening.

Another self righteous opinionated do gooder finding smokers an easy target, but what about the tenant that lives below that has a really long term case of flatulence that's noisy as well as smelly what would you expect them to do.

As its there property they can do what they wish within reason.

So if a neighbour came round and said "Your smoke is getting into my flat", you'd stop smoking in your flat until you'd identified and fixed the problem?

You seem to be forgetting that you choose to smoke, and could quite easily quit tomorrow, and that the pollution is a direct, inherent and utterly foreseeable byproduct of smoking.

Madness. I don't smoke but I certainly wouldn't expect - or dream of asking - a neighbour to stop smoking in their own home because it was coming through to mine. I'd see it as my responsibility to investigate and fix the problem allowing the smoke to leak asap.

This is a problem with the structure of the OPs flat, not a problem with smoking neighbours.

I'd have thought the smell would have been apparent when the OP viewed the property.
Personally, I wouldn't have bought the flat.

Very few cars are run in enclosed conditions, directly underneath people's homes.

But air pollution caused by cars kills lots of people still.

I smoke, although only outside, never in my own home let alone someone elses, but my car is an electric car so I don't pollute that way.

I bet I have a lesser overall effect on the health of others than you ;)

Back to the OP, I (and many others) wouldn't ever even countenance smoking in our own homes, but in this case there probably isn't much you can do to stop this person doing it. While it sucks, making your property airtight is probably your responsibility if you want to avoid this.

I think it's worth approaching the neighbour to ask if they have noticed any gaps, or if they can help in some way for you to solve this problem (NOT by telling them to stop smoking or that it is their problem).

Some sort of positive input ventilation (PIV) should help in situations where the problem can't be solved by sealing up alone. Either an improvised fan working to push fresh air into the home or a full PIV system.

Also beware of which window you open to ventilate your flat/house. If you open one on the leeward side of the building, it can pull the smells into your home and make things worse. Opening a window on the windward side (usually west or south in the UK) should help reduce the smelly air being drawn in.

Your right it's not an argument, but smokers are always an easy target for the self righteous.....

    However

I think if you bothered to read the thread properly then you would understand why I responded instead of making stupid remarks.

    Have a good day.:)
  • I'm presuming that this post/question is actually a joke an not serious. What people do in their own homes is entirely upto them, I don't like the air freshener my neighbor uses so shall I get them to pay to have my flat professionally cleaned ? Not to mention the fact they cook food I don't like the smell of, so I'll get a restraining order preventing them from cooking. I also don't like the smell of the flowers they have planted in their garden so I'll get a judge to order them to concrete over it all.

    Zimdee,
take no notice of the negative posters, they clearly have never experienced smoke permeation so, to them, this means it simply doesn't happen!
Its a much more common problem than you would think.
I had this problem in my holiday flat. The people in the flat at the back of mine were really heavy smokers and their smoke came directly into my bedroom through the central service shaft. It was completely unbearable, we couldn't use the room at all.
The management company were brilliant, they came out to investigate and agreed it was unacceptable. The neighbours were told to stop smoking inside or leave. We all had nice balconies so its not like they didn't have an external smoking area!
Also, in my previous house, the lady next door had the same problem with the neighbours in the semi attached to hers (the other side from me). The smoker was a bedridden elderly man so nothing she could do really. When the old chap died the problem went away.

Other than explaining the problem to your downstairs neighbours and politely requesting them to stop smoking inside there's not a lot you can do.
