we have the same problem ( ) - there is a flat that is joined to the back of ours, somehow the smoke comes through a access hatch in the back toilet, ( where gas pipe and water shut offs are) ,
person behind claims they have no vents , just solid walls at the back of there's , ( must be magic smoke) ,

As she was a right cow about it when i causally asked if she had a vent, i thought id do something about it, so have purchased a air tight access hatch to hopefully stop the issue, that and a few stink bombs to throw in there, figured it can go both ways ,

I find smokers to be remarkably selfish people. I feel for you, There will be no point in going to speak to them as they will see it as "their right" to pollute your home

What a nasty generalisation, I would as a smoker make every effort to help in this kind of situation.

Why would I think its my right to pollute another home, most odd, do smokers go round blowing smoke into letterboxes now.

Still so easy to have a pop at smokers, bet you wouldn't say the same with ref to race, religion etc.

I once had a similar problem with a neighbours cooking smells - they were very fond of fish and curry and my bathroom regularly smelt awful. We sealed what we could but it was a run of Victorian terraces so there was too much shared airspace under floors etc. it was impossible to block out the smell completely. I learned to live with it but it wasn't nice and left me with a habit of 'sniffing' in every cupboard and corner when I view properties nowadays.

So if a neighbour came round and said "Your smoke is getting into my flat", you'd stop smoking in your flat until you'd identified and fixed the problem?

You seem to be forgetting that you choose to smoke, and could quite easily quit tomorrow, and that the pollution is a direct, inherent and utterly foreseeable byproduct of smoking.
  • How could choosing to pollute everyone else's air not be considered selfish? As well as the cost on the tax payer for the health problems.

True things often sound nasty to those that aren't interested in listening.

Which is probably more than covered by the taxes smokers pay ;)

A few of my friends smoke, and I can't think of any of them who actually smoke in their homes. Even when it is throwing it down with rain they go out to their garden with an umbrella!

So while some smokers may be selfish, the same as there are selfish neighbours who are non-smokers, it is entirely unfair to tar them all (no pun intended :D) with the same brush.

Oh, and I'm not a smoker!

Yes and what about car drivers especially diesel who choose to drive such a vehicle that as you put it "the pollution is a direct, inherent and utterly foreseeable byproduct"
I would imagine far more damage is being done by them than by any passive smoking.

Very few cars are run in enclosed conditions, directly underneath people's homes.

Aside from the obvious problems with your analogy, driving serves a very different purpose in society. It connects people, enables businesses, and allows families to send children to school, and many other positive things.

Smoking gives you and your loved ones cancer.

    And I'm a smoker.
