How about a morrocon lamb tagine? Something a bit different to a chili, and due to the great flavours in the dish you could do two pots, one with veggies instead of meat. I love the Nigella recipe http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/lambanddatetagine_90621.shtml. I must admit I never use dates (just a personal preference) but in this one anything goes! Accompany it with a cous cous for a great dish.
You can bulk the dish up with lentils, potatoes, veggies, black eyed beans etc to make it more cost effective and as it is a caserole style dish you could use lamb shoulder instead of leg to decrease the cost further. :j
You can make this one in advance and reheat it too. With the money saved you could experiment with some different flat breads as another accompaniment. I liked the look of these on 'come dine with me' a while back http://www.channel4.com/food/recipes/occasions/dinner-parties/come-dine-with-me/series-4/egyptian-dukkah-and-flatbread-recipe_p_1.html. Maybe you could experiment with these and using other flavours (think parmesan, sundried tomatoes, oregano etc). Beauty of flatbreads is because they dont rise not much can go wrong
!
I think this teamed with a few easy desserts (or even just birthday cake!) would be a relatively easy but exciting dish to try. I have more ideas if you are after something else!!

Hi
Thanks everyone there are some fantastic ideas!
Are there any of the nibbles/cakes/sweets that I could make which keep for a while?
Everyone will bring plenty of alcohol so I am not worried about that part (which is a big expensive. I am more concerned about the time element but I would rather make it myself than buy it. I think I watched too much of Kirsty and her home made house!
I love the Morrocan idea, I might just try doing a veggie one and try and win over all the meat eaters!Debt Free - done

what kind of things have you made in the past? what baking basics do you have? How far in advance would you be making it?

twinks biscuits and banana cake, can all be made in the week before the party and frozen. They taste lovely when defrosted and I made them for a Christening party. Sliced the cake before freezing, so less work to do on the day apart from stick it on a plate.!! Recipes on front of Food ChallengeMortgage free as at 1/9/13 :j

Hi guys,
We are having a get together of 4 people on eurovision night and I have suggested I cook something - savoury and sweet but needs to be substantial enough for a meal.
Any ideas for a tv party type dinner, want it to be economical and fun but not too messy. Fairly unfussy crowd to cook for.
Thanks

How about something cheesy?

genius !
How about fondues (s)
nice cheese one to start with crudites, boiled new pots, cured meats, french bread etc. Then a chocolate one with fresh fruit & marshmallows.
