i had two of these once and one killed the other after i'd had them about a month!! the surviving one lived for 2 years so i dont think it did him any harm really. i think maybe some are more territorial than others!Mummy to

I have had many different kinds of hamsters but we always kept them in seperate cages if we had more than one at a time, so I cant say anything about them killing each other.
However I can assure you the remaining hamster will be fine on his own.0 -
I have robos and whilst they are sold in pairs and can get along together I had to seperate my trio due to squabbling. It was pretty bad, and I've no doubt they could or would of killed each other. The problem arises when they hit maturity and hormones kick in.
You can help eliminate fighting by making sure each hammy has one of everything each, ie if you have two you need two wheels etc. Also don't use a food bowl, scatter directly onto the cage floor.
My lone robos have been perfectly happy on their own. It is possible to introduce another robo to your lone one but it is a complicated matter and no really advisable if your aren't experienced with hamsters, also its not fail safe and they might not like each other either so you'd need to be prepared to have two cages if need be.0 -
Also to add hamsters are omnivores and enjoy meat, they are not veggie as a lot of people think.

I had 2 robos and they used to fight quite often, but thankfully never harmed one another. It is definately very likely that one ate the other one, as i had this fear with mine, when one got ill. In my case tho i found one morning one had passed away and the other was cuddled up next to it-heartbreaking.
Mine was fine on its own after a few weeks, seemed relucent to eat at 1st, but a few hamster chocolate buttons cheered it up! Just make sure you give the remaining one more time and attention and im sure itll be fine.0 -
I want to thank you all for you very helpful posts and comments.
I am now relieved to think that my daughter remaining little guy will probably survive on his own. ( I wasn't keen on her getting any hamsters but there robos are so cute and funny to watch I've actually fallen for them)
Also, my daughter is pretty freaked out by the fact one ate the other so Lady Fluff your comments are particularly helpful. I had not noticed any fighting between them. They seemed to get on fine.
I have printed out this thread to let her read your answers. Thank you again.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

Can I thank everyone for their replies too, we found one of our robos had eaten the other one Sunday, it's still upsetting me so thought i'd check on here if anyone had the same thing happen. Ours were quite young too and seemed to get on fine, they had seperate beds and it looks like the one went into the others bed as that was where the remains were. Thanks for posting January its put my mind at rest it was nothing we did x0

I know some may criticise me making this comment but... You stated it wasn't noticed for 2 days. Any pet should be checked on at least daily, if not several times a day. Hammies can go down hill very quickly with illness, and a regular check on them will allow you to spot things early and make sure they remain fit, healthy and happy.

Mid-June my daughter (16) bought 2 roborovski hamsters. 2 males aged 6 weeks at the time.
All went well until yesterday evening, when she found the remains of one of them. I say remains because there was very little left of it. You could hardly tell it had been a hamster. She had cleaned the cage about 2 days ago and both hamsters appeared healthy and well, so....
Is it possible that one could have killed the other?
Is it normal for a healthy hamster to eat a dead one (they had been fed).
Will the remaining hamster be able to survive on his own? they were sold in pairs so am assuming that the reason is they get lonely alone? I checked him this morning and he seems to be fine, had a healthy portion of breakfast!
I have experience of Syrian hamsters but not these little ones so any help, tips, link to reliable websites would be appreciated.
Thanks0 -

Ruby Moon, I had not noticed any bullying between them. I did spend a bit of time watching them as they are such cute creatures, but of course I have no idea what happened in the middle of the night when we were asleep and they weren't.
Anyway, the remaining hamster is doing very well. He is being spoiled rotten of course and is looking happy and healthy, not bothered about being alone. I do wish he would come out of his bed earlier in the evening though! But that's hamsters!
Thank you for your post Zippy. We should not forget that nature has its own ways and sometimes we are reminded of that fact in an unpleasant fashion.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012
