American Fridge-Freezers

  • Non plumbed for me, tank gets filled up every couple of days, not exactly a hassle i've just worked it into part of the kitchen chores.
It would be more of a hassle not being able to move the fridge to a new location (large kitchen more spaces it can go) if i wanted too, plus i wouldnt care to much for yet another plumbed in appliance to worry over leaking if it went wrong.

Also have a plumbed in Samsung for app 10 years, mod required after first year but no problem since. I use the ice and chilled water every day so not just a fad in my case. Very simple to plumb in as just a "T" required off your existing cold supply then the small bore plastic pipe and in line filter installed.

in my case the water pipes are the other side of the kitchen and floors are concrete! I will need to plan in advance if I want it plumbed in.

I have a plumbed in Rangemaster. The chilled water is very welcome in the summer and the ice is welcome all year round;). I wouldn't want to be faffing with filling a reservoir

Mine has double doors on the top, which are the fridge and two drawers below which are the freezer. I think this is a far better layout than the more usual fridge behind one full length door and freezer behind the other.

So if I get it plumbed in will I be able to pull it out from time to time to clean underneath it (ie does it have a flexible hose fitting like washing machine?)

Yes, it's a small flexible hose & it's easy to pull the appliance out.

The 'hose' is very small, about the width of a drinking straw, very long and very flexible. You choose when you first fit the filter where along the hose you want it to go, it's long enough that you could have it fitted to a cupboard/wall besides the fridge so you wouldn't have to pull the fridge right out out when it needed changing.

We've had our Samsung 10 years, no problems at all, apart from a kitten sinking her teeth into the hose :D

  • This post has got me interested in a plumbed fridge freezer now when we get our kitchen redone, hadn't really considered it before!

How good are the filters on these? Would they be comparable to a Brita filter? Just had a quick look at a Samsung, and would probably work out a similar cost if you only replace them every 6 months, but are they as effective?

No idea, in 10 years I've changed it once. There's nothing wrong with the stuff that comes out of our taps.

Change it at about six months.

And certainly agree with plumbed in, as preference. Stale water in a dispenser isn't appealing.

Plus if you buy bottled water, plumbed and filtered is a Moneysaving choice.

Do watch the prices change SUBSTANTIALLY on AO.com, when Currys or whoever, have a special offer on one of their models.

I've read varied reports about Samsung but from what you say you sound happy with yours.

I am happy with mine - it has done us very well, and is still going strong :D

    Thanks everyone.

I didn't know about the filters, so I will check how easy these are to change before I choose a model.
