This thread is for VPN recommendations/reviews please. There's a lot of rubbish and lies out there.

I'll post some reviews soon. Others could chip in, in the mean time.

Thanks.

This is an interesting site, can't comment on how genuine it is though:

So, back to my experience, avoid Purevpn and BlackVPN. The former are shysters and the latter in my experience didn't deliver the speeds. Your mileage may vary but read and read and read again before signing up. Wherever possible try a trial first. If no trial is offered stay away from them.

This looks interesting but also quite expensive while in beta:

You all need to be aware of something........ It's looking as though big business in pushing it's influence on the authorities and the authorities are pushing their influence on various high profile websites and using Camerons !!!!!! filters to block people on VPN services, i've been hearing of a number of complaints of people being unable to access some websites via some of the biggest VPN providers.

There's a war going on, freedom of information versus outside interests that would like to keep us "dumb".

This is probably going to be a bit like asking which is the best anti-virus – everyone has an opinion, not necessarily based on fact but on preference/subjectivity/prejudice, each equally valid in its own way.

Anyway for what it’s worth, I have been using AirVPN for the last two years. It’s one of the more secure VPNs having been set up by “hacktivists and activists,” has no perceptible loss of speed, allows P2P which a number of VPN providers don’t, and there is a free trial period.

Many reviews have noted that AirVPN isn’t particularly user friendly, being geared more towards the “expert” user, but I’ve never had any problems and I would hardly classify myself as being anywhere near expert.

There is a pretty good review here.

Depends on what you are going to be using the VPN for...

If you are looking for privacy on public wifi networks, then set one up yourself using your home internet connection. I have done this using a Draytek router off ebay and a DYNDNS login so that I always know what the IP address is.

I then can connect to the VPN on public WiFi's safe in the knowledge that its secure. Not only that but when I'm abroad, I can use the VPN to see BBC iPlayer or check my lottery ticket.

    Pretty much this.

If it's for privacy on a public network, get a Raspberry Pi, stick OpenVPN on it and setup dynamic DNS and you're all set.

If it's for privacy at home, then rent a virtual server somewhere and stick OpenVPN on it. A fairly low spec one would be fine and could be had for a couple of quid a month, and it's not too difficult to set up.

I used Hidemyass.com for a while and found them very good. Never any problems connecting and several options per country. not quite sure how it compares price wise, but seemed reasonable.

I used PIA for a few years and never really had issues, when it came to renewing I moved to Nord VPN which seems to be equally as good and not based in the US as PIA now are.
  • i am using express VPN for my online privacy.
