It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. I'd be very cross that he hadn't shared the information but equally cross at myself for never asking. At the end of the day you both spent that money, not just him. He's probably had MANY sleepless nights over it and wanted to save you from it. Stupid but his heart was probably in the right place.
