Fuel efficiency remapping

And of course the big elephant in the room is diesel emissions.
VW got caught effectively having 2 maps in their vehicles (one for testing, one for driving) - In the UK there is no post maunfacture NOx testing and as none of the remappers quote higher power, better mpg and lower emissions I am assuming the former is at the expense of the latter.
But it does illustrate my point well - if it was so easy to get such big gains, why would manufacturers take such risks with vast amounts of money and reputation?0 -

Part of the problem is that "emissions" are are not a single entity but made of a cocktail of nasties. Reducing levels one harmful emission can lead to an increase in another.
Most of the stuff that comes out of an exhaust pipe is perfectly harmless.0 -

Noticed that viezu database has an Eco and then a performance map. The Eco is only 15hp more but I reckon any such change whether it is 0.5hp or 500hp a 'normal' insurer will not be interested
Even comparison sites have a "modifications" section that allows you just to tick boxes. I have had a modified car insured through Elephant.
You don't get more mainstream than that.
Incidentally, I have a couple of forum "friends" who have tried a Viezu economy map on their cars and reported very little difference, mpg wise, between that and a high performance map (when driven gently).0 -
Still claiming they're all "multi-million pound" businesses? Will we be admitting that one was as false as a false thing?

They've got assets of £0.9967 million, which presumably means their turnover is in the multiples of millions. Therefore they are a multi-million pound business, no?0 -

Because the vast majority of their fleet is going to be run with the absolute minimum of maintenance and the engine map needs to handle the lowest common denominator. That's why the higher spec Evos have a 6 month service interval whilst a 1.9TDI Passat has a 2 year service interval.
Remapping tends to produce some gains (torque, with some economy side effects) at some expense (often reducing the tolerances to abuse - increasing the rev limit range, turning up the boost/fueling, which may make it unsuitable for the average white-box driver and normally means an increase in servicing regularity).
Ford could easily bring out cars tuned better than the remappers, but no-one would buy the cars because they'd moan about having to get them serviced so often and how unreliable they before when neglected. It'd be a PR disaster. Thus, they go for something a bit safer.
Plus, you can often get better fuel economy out of the higher tune manufacturer equivalent, so higher power can mean better economy (I was thinking of the Passats again, you could get a ~110, ~130 and ~160bhp variant of the 1.9TD which were identical apart from the mapping, when we had a 2004 model).
Even my current car is available in 134 or 184bhp flavours, and my previous one in 115 or 135 flavours. Again, just mapping.0 -
Did you notice their net assets figure?
I've covered this several times for you - its a multi million pound turnover business - thats what i meant originally and being the sad little man this thread has proved you are, you're clutching at that one tiny little straw now in a feeble attempt in your mind to retain some dignity.
You could just admit you were wrong about remapping - your dignity on this thread has long since gone anyway. :rotfl:0 -

Debating this particular subject with you is like playing chess with a pigeon. Even though i might be the more knowledgeable and better player, at some point the pigeon is going to knock over all the pieces, !!!! on the board and strut around like hes won.

There are many insurers who wont charge extra if the remap / tuning box is below a certain BHP, or a certain BHP percentage.
It might be worth checking and giving them the info its an eco remap and adjusts the BHP by only 15bhp.
I guess then you're in to return on investment. Cost of remap + insurance costs = £X. You will save £X per month assuming say a 7.5% saving (or whatever figure you think is realistic), then you can work out in months how long before you break even, and taking in to account how long you plan to keep the car.0 -
Would also be worth speaking to some of the tuning box companies.
The one i've on my T5 have five settings ranging from ECO with a little extra power through to PERFORMANCE which extracts the max power it can irrespective of the impact on fuel.
Those tend to cheaper and being plug and play are less intrusive, though may not give as precise a result0
