He does say he bought it from a dealer friend of his..

In which case the dealer friend should have sent the V5C to the DVLA (or notified them on-line and destroyed the V5C) when he sold the car, and the seller should only have the green New Keeper Supplement from it, or a new V5C in their name.

It looks more and more like a dealer trying to sell privately, for whatever reason...............

Thanks everyone. A lucky escape. I think my gut feeling was telling me something and it's always good to get the feedback on here.

Tbh she seemed nice but said a few things that made me think 'she doth protest too much'. She said 'I have 4 kids, we'd never sell anything that we didn't know was ok' blah blah.

It might have been a good car at £350. If you go be what you read on here you'll never buy one.

But having said that he sold a VW Beatle with another sob story this month. He's a trader trying to cover his tracks.

Yes I and they are right to be suspicious. Something doesn't add up. He hasn't made much effort to sell it to me really has he?! No paperwork etc.

You need to avoid buying any car that isn't being sold by the person on the V5 at the address on the V5. I've heard this 'bought for x and they don't want it' many times; it's a dodgy dealer line; same as 'i'm selling it for x, or its my bro-in -law's car'; yeah right it is!
  • Depending on your personal finances if £300 is not all you have got in the world I would buy it and take a chance, its not a lot of money. You say you only need it for a few months its not as if you expect it to last years.

Its not right that they haven't filled out the forms but they have them. In fact this could be an advantage to you when you sell it on as having a car with an owner for only a few weeks is not going to look good.

Re the paperwork they must have it if you have seen a photo and if you turn up to collect and its not there, then walk away, you will have the right to do this as the car is not as advertised.

They have admitted they got it form a dealer and its not what they wanted so therefore never used, so why would they remove the brown paper!

If the cars was selling for 1000s yes quite agree stay away but its a few 100 I can't see what anyone is going to get out of this for the sake of a couple of 100 quid. The OP said they lived in a decent area so it doesn't sound like they are desperate for the money.
  • I think I'd rather spend a bit more money and not have all the hassle and worry. It has to feel right, yes even for £300. It's more the principle of not letting myself be ripped off.

Fair point, personally I would take a chance but thats me :D at least if there was an issue it would not come as a shock to me I would have gambled and lost!

Bear in mind that any car at this price range is potentially going to have issues wherever/whoever you buy from.
