  • hire a large lorry or trailer or even large skip, and have it parked across you drive/land entrance (on your land) and tell them if they dont leave, you'll leave the lorry/trailer/skip there. It'll prevent them trading from your land, and prevent them coming and going as they please.

Even though they rarely have a regular 9-5 job, they still need to leave and return to shop/collect old washing machines/steal copper pipe from plumbers so the sight or thought of being blocked in may help in shifting them

    Good luck

EDIT: just read the other replies, glad they've gone. Failing blocking them in I was going to suggest chasing them off with a bar of soap in your hand, I've never met one who uses the stuff so there may be some allergy in their genes or something?

I'd tell your 'friend' he's responsible for any clearing up of your land thats required too, letter to the local papers about him/her could damage their reputation remember
  • As one person wrote probably true travellers are often ok however do you have about 12-20 burly men with muscles - if not find them and get them out - I totally agree with locking gates and making it awkward for them. Police - interested???? who knows - I doubt it.
Sometimes if you want action you have to take it yourself - good luck

    They have finally gone!!:j :j :j

After several hours of faffing around, they finally packed up all their stuff and towed their damned caravan off our land, but even that was not totally the end of it. After they had gone I realised they had left a dog behind, a strange dog who has not been here all week. It was tied to a makeshift kennel without food or water. We fed and watered the poor thing and it sat out there for several hours whining. I was just on the verge of ‘phoning the dog warden when their son came back for it. By this time I had barricaded the gate with chains and padlocks. It did not seem too happy to go with him, but I expect it does not have much of a life, poor thing.

This has been the worst week of my life, an experience I would not wish on anyone and I know we got off fairly lightly, it could have been a lot worse. I would like to thank all the posters on this thread, it has helped enormously knowing that there are people out there who have offered advice and sympathy, so a great big thank you to everyone. :A :A :A

Now, what have I learnt from this. Three things.

    1. I will never do a favour for anyone ever again.

    2. There are some people you cannot reason with, these freeloaders treated my land with utter contempt, but they did not seem capable of understanding that it was MY land. I pay the mortgage, Council tax, water rates etc. They have no concept of the idea of people working hard to own property, they just think they can intrude on your land with impunity.

    3. Hard working, honest people like my husband and I are the mugs! We pay our taxes, council tax, car tax etc, we do not claim any benefits, we work hard and yet we get stuffed all the time. These parasites contribute nothing.

The son drove an old van which had a tax disc which expired in April 2005. I will be giving the registration numbers of all the cars to our policeman friend, but I think that will achieve nothing. I read recently that of all those caught who do not have car tax less than half are prosecuted. So why do I spend £200 per year taxing my car when these scroungers do not? I don’t suppose these people pay a penny in tax etc. yet the law seems to be on their side. As Debt Free Chick said they are classed as an "ethnic group" which is a total joke as they are not from a particular ethnic group at all, they are simply people who have chosen to live like this.

My husband was concerned after I had the argument with them as he thought they might go to the police and I could be arrested for using offensive or "racist" language. What a joke! They invade our land and we are the ones in fear of arrest.

Once again thanks everyone. I still have our acquaintance to deal with, the b*****d.
  • I just read the whole thing, OMG I would have gone crazy! With these kind of people there is only one thing that works: threats and shouting, because that is all the know  I can't believe the law lets them get away with everything, it is one of my pet peeves. Thank goodness they left, good luck with your acquaintance!

Great news! :j Don't forget to go about securing your land now to ensure you can avoid gypsies invading again. Ditches and mounds of earth as suggested above sound like a good idea..but chained gates will help in the meantime! Do still keep a close eye on things in the coming days though.

    Poor dog :(

That they have made you feel like this now by taking advantage of your good nature really annoys me . Understandably they've broken your trust in people and it will take time for you to restore that. Obviously you (and all of us) can learn from this of how not to make the same mistakes and be taken for granted.

And every time the storm and the soul wars come
    You just keep on walking

I'm glad you've got rid of them. Must have been a nightmare for you.

It's laughable how they get off with things. There were some travellers parked in a carpark a few miles from here. They'd been there for a couple of months. A French family pulled up to stay the night as they thought it was a free campsite. Unbelievably the French tourists moved on but the travellers got to stay! http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/news/tm_headline=baffled-french-tourists-stay-at-travellerlodge&method=full&objectid=19829340&siteid=66633-name_page.html
  • Part of my job is to evict Travellers from work sites. You can ask Bailiffs to serve Notice and evict the next day but they are free to return so you would need to make sure that the place is secure. Try Constant and Co in Beds (ex police officers) - they can be trusted and will remove your 'guests' within 2 days. You do not need to go through the Courts.
  • Vet8 - i think i left my watch behind. Can you have a look for it in your yard :D
