And did you see any long queues of cars or did your blinkers prevent this? ;)

    This is from Trip Advisor:

You can either drive through in your car or walk across. If you drive you could be held up (as long as 3 hours) at peak periods of the day to get in or out as volumes of cars increase and Spanish customs to get into Spain tend to ask if you have anything to declare. Spanish customs officers can be very strict (and awkward at times).

You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Because that was yonks ago and now the Spanish dislike the English due to the Gibralter dispute so they will very probably make things as difficult as possible for us.
Unless Spexit happens (i.e. Spain exiting Schengen), then it won't be up to Spain to decide anyway. Being part of the Schengen area, they are forced to accept whatever immigration terms are laid down in Brussels.

Back to the OP, if you want to pay the fine online (and it was issued by the Generalitat de Catalunya or Servei Català de Trànsit) it can be done at: http://web.gencat.cat/en/tramits/tramits-temes/1-Fer-el-pagament-de-les-sancions-de-transit?evolutiuTramit=1

When you hire a car in Spain you have to give your passport details on the hire form.
If your hire car gets a traffic violation the police contact the hire company who then pass on your all your details.
Therefore your passport is linked to the traffic violation.
If the hire company have to pay any traffic violation on your behalf they will then debit the credit card that you used for the deposit.
