It depends what kind of things you like to cook really, but our staples are:
Stock powders
Crushed chilli (very versatile)
Ginger in a jar
Garlic and onions
Capers
Dried herbs such as basil, oregano
Bay leaves
Soy sauce for marinades
Lots of tinned tomatoes
Tinned anchovies for emergencies (spaghetti + tomato + capers + anchovies)
Basmati
Arborio (if you like risottos)
The others that we always have but not everyone would necessarily use a lot of:
Cinnamon sticks, cardamom, cinnamon powder, paprika, celery saltMy TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -

I don't think you should follow my example: I have 6 kinds of rice, barley, tabbouleh, couscous, 4 kinds lentils, 2 other kinds of beans, 4 kinds of flour, 4 kinds Italian pasta, 4 other kinds of noodles, 12 tins pulses, multiple cans baked beans and tinned tomatoes, 4 tins coconut milk, 4 kinds dried fruit, 6 kinds of nuts, breadcrumbs, lots of tins of fruit, 20 different spices at least, and so on!
What our 'basics' are depends on how we eat, how much storage we have and how much of our income we can afford to have 'in stock'. I'd suggest you get the things on a basic list and then see what you really use. If you're not using it once a month, perhaps you don't really need it.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -

Hi wonder if you lovely people have any ideas!
I need to do a monthly shop anyway but I've let my storecupboard really thin out! Using things that needed it! I was also trying to let my freezer empty a bit to defrost and clean.
Stupidly I unplugged it to cut the grass and ruined the contents! Probably about £50 worth of food! I'm mad at myself however need to restock fridge, freezer and store cupboard! Got Mr T and A nearby along with butchers, Lidl, and Aldi!
Thanks to everyone on here I do meal plan! But basically looking for what people would do if starting from scratch with £130 pounds to spend? This will have to cover 10 days meals. Sounds easy but I need literally everything . Lentils, oats, salt etc etc
I do have stock cubes, flour and sugar! Also get milk delivered and have a huge block of cheese! I cook from scratch and bake but will pick up odd jar of say sweet and sour or something similar for an easy meal occasionally!
Interested in responses!

Here's the beginning of a list for you. I've tried to keep it very basic as there are things some people consider essentials that others don't. I've also not gone into a lot of detail with meat/spice/herbs as it totally depends what you eat.
Salt
Pepper
Dried herbs and spices (various – depends what you cook)
Vinegars – malt, cider, wine (for me cider is most essential)
Sauces – (ketchup, brown, soy, chilli, mustards etc)
Bread (if you don't bake)
Sugar
Flour – (plain, wholemeal, SR)
Yeast (if you bake)
Baking powder
Tinned Tomatoes
Dried/tinned beans & chickpeas
Baked beans
Lentils
Dried pasta
Rice
Quinoa/Millet/Couscous/Barley
Gravy powder
Stock cubes/bouillon
Vegetable oil
Olive oil
Tomato puree
Oats
Tinned fish
Tea/Coffee
Potatoes
Carrots
Celery
Peppers
Broccoli
Cabbage
Garlic
Onions
Bananas
Apples
Eggs
Milk
Cheese
Butter/Marg
Juice
Meat (depends what you will be eating)
Peas
Sweetcorn
Frozen berries (smoothies/dessert)
Hope that helps!0
