That's the thing though - as a Hard Core Old Styler I bake cakes (need eggs, flour, sugar, butter) and cook all my meals from scratch (need different veg, protein sources, olive oil, seasoning, tinned tomatoes, chilli, pasta, rice).
How can I decide which is most important

If I had to choose just one storecupboard item it would have to be eggs as they are so versatile

Ok, this is a hyperthetical question really but........ if we were ever in the situation where there was no electricity so we couldn't use frozen foods or store fresh foods in the fridge, what tinned foods would you choose to live off for a typical week?0

Beans of various sorts. Could make a nice bean salad.
Tuna, Salmon.(could be added to the above salad)0 -
Forgot to say, you have a camping gas stove or an open fire that you can use so you can choose foodstuffs to heat up.0

My tin store usually consists of...
baked beans
tinned toms
spaghetti hoops
ravioli
tuna
salmon
pilchards
mackerel
sardines
borlotti beans
navy beans
pinto beans
chickpeas
spam
corned beef
sweetcorn
soups
tomato puree
pineapple
cherries
strawberries
peaches
pears
pie fillings
rice pudding
I have a little portable stove as we often get powercuts but don't tend to need it so much now as I've got a duel fuel hob.
We have a bbq too and I have a dutch oven, camping kettle etc so we're set :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
I was wondering about cooking, think I'd just end up at McDonalds for the week if my only other option was eating salads all week!
I keep a lot of stuff in the fridge that isn't supposed to be kept in it - eggs, lettuce, onions etc. I'd probably resort to just shopping every day for meat to be honest, haha. Or doing something like risottos, omelettes (with the eggs that would be going past it quicker), pasta with sauce over, stir fry... I think the only difference to me would be making up small portions instead of making some to freeze, and using less meat that can't be stored anywhere!0 -
Tomatoes
Baked beans
Spaghetti hoops
Cannelini/borlotti beans
Tuna
Sweetcorn
Soup
Corned beef
If we had no facilities for fresh food in the fridge, I might be tempted with the tins of ready mixed tuna/mayonnaise/sweetcorn (mixes into pasta or tops a jacket potato, and it would be a waste to buy a whole jar of mayo with no way to store it before it went off) and maybe some macaroni cheese - not as good as a homemade cheese sauce but, again, I wouldn't want to buy a whole block of cheese, etc, etc, as they would go off before I ate them.

Tinned chicken in white sauce.
For some strange snobbish / don't do convenience foods type reason, I can't bring myself to buy it, but its kinda comfort food on buttered toast, with rice, or on jacket spuds. Did buy a tin in Sainsbury's this week, telling myself it was for DD and her boyfriend as an easy tea for them to make at the weekend. Might eat it myself for supper tomorrow now!0 -
First of all, we all used to live without freezers and fridges not that long ago so it isn't really a problem. You just shop every couple of days for fresh stuff:rolleyes:
But in a situation where you can't do that -plague or disaster then I would go for-
dried beans -an assortment
lentils
mung beans -these can be sprouted and will therefore provide fresh veg full of vitamins;)
dried milk, UHt milk
oats
barley
popcorn
oil
tinned fish
dreid fruit
tinned fruit
seeds and nuts
pasta
tinned tomatoes
tea
coffee
longlife fruit juice
hard cheese -does not need to be refrigerated if kept somewhere cool
alcohol;)0
