Cleaning additives dont work like that. The benefit builds up over time.

I know. You'd have to take 2 engines apart after 100,000 miles of identical driving. I'm talking about the people in this thread claiming their cars seem quieter, smoother, faster, more responsive etc.

    True.

In fairness, i wouldnt pay extra for premium diesel personally. If i'd an older diesel or keeping one long term i'd stick the likes of millers additive in with every fill.

I use V-Power 99% of the time. I've NEVER put supermarket fuel in my current car.

    2 65 plate & 12 66 plate... all leased.

    The 2 65 plates are on 39000 & 43000 miles.

I used to use Feully.com to log my fuel use and noticed that my Astra averaged 66 mpg on branded standard diesel, but only 57 mpg on supermarket diesel.

    Same for my 1.6HDi Berlingo.
To be honest it does intrigue me that supermarkets round my way charge the same as branded outlets per litre for diesel, but deliver an inferior product.

I use Millers and I'm pretty sure it makes the engine a bit smoother, could be all in my mind though. Being a suspicious person I wonder if you do get what you're paying for with premium fuels, it would be easy to fill the garage tanks with the same standard stuff and make extra profit.

Also use Millers as well, no idea if it works however feed this into a an ix35 diesel, now used for shorter journeys following a change of job, along with Morrisons fuel. No problems as yet, apart from stuff stinks if you manage to spill in your boot!

In fairness, fresh or new cars that i dont intend to have forever i'd be quite happy running on non premium diesel, in fact i did that with my 9 month old Golf 1.6TDI that i ran for or 21 months and did 25,000 miles a year in. Drove it on the cheapest supermarket diesel.

Where i tend to get jumpy is with older diesels. They do tend to clog themselves up as the years go on and "something" that helps clean that can only be a good thing.

I personally dont bother with premium diesel, but for the couple of pence a litre it would cost me to stick a Millers cleaning agent in, then i think its worth it. All IMHO of course.

It must be round your way that happens. When i'd my 2012 Golf 1.6TDI diesel there was no discernable difference between main brand and supermarket diesel. In fact my "best ever" brim to brim calculation over a tankful that came out at 70.3mpg was on cheap supermarket diesel.

I'd be extremely surprised if you were getting a nigh on 20% variance. Summer diesel v winter diesel perhaps? The winter stuff does give slightly worse mpg..

I also had a diesel Skoda and found that there was no difference in mpg between branded and supermarket diesel.
At a guess, I'd say that VW engines are less susceptable to variations in fuel quality.
