Were now at a age where all our friends are enjoying expensive holidays mostly retired early on good pensions. Us however havent now had a holiday even a small uk one for 3 years. We are both in our mid 50s and still have a mortgage all our kids have flown the nest and we just wish we could afford to get away but we cant. Lent some money to our son for house deposit no sign of that been repaid either . Just feel that its all work work and more work.

My heart is bleeding
Not been on holiday for three years either
Last year we paid our daughters wedding
This year DH is down to a 3 day
We will live0 -
You have each other, your family, you're buying your own home and you both have jobs. It could be a lot worse, but I'm guessing you're not in the mood for counting your blessings.
Only a couple of months and spring will be here so you can get out for a few lovely walks or picnics. Can you give yourselves a little inexpensive treat to cheer yourselves up tomorrow? make yourselves afternoon tea using the best china, perhaps? Spend the day in dressing gowns watching old movies? Afternoon sex?;)
Edit: We're mid-50's and not yet retired and the only friends we have who retired early went at 61 and 62.0 -
Buy a tent. That's what we did when money was tight.
Actually it was a trailer tent and we still use it.
Edit: BTW I'm in my mid fifties with a mortgage and still working.0 -
Why lend money if it's that tight?
Were the mortgage company under the impression the deposit was gifted? They don't usually accept a borrowed deposit. Perhaps your son misunderstood too.
You presumably saved that, so can you not afford a holiday on a deal? I go away twice a year usually and don't spend a fortune. One was a £29-ish offer on Wowcher for a gorgeous apartment for the week for the 2 of us in Spain. Flights were under £100 each, but could get for less than half the price if you don't take everything including the kitchen sink like me.
Downsize/move to a cheaper area to release some funds? I'm buying for significantly less this year to lose all or nearly all my mortgage.
Lots of my friends are in their 50s and none of them have retired yet. It's very early. Stop comparing yourself to them. Most of us work for much longer.

Why not go camping? Or stay in a hostel? If the kids have flown the nest then you should be able to get off-peak rates - I'd have thought you could get a small self-catered apartment somewhere for a few hundred ££.
We booked a week away for all four of us during the easter hols for £400 so there are some good deals out there even during the school holidays.0 -
Sun holiday?0

We've not been away as a family for around 7 years now as we have no one to look after our pets with health problems and they come first. We have a bit of an odd set up where we do things separately, so still do things though.
As mentioned above Sun holidays are cheap and cheerful. We did one pre pets just to see what it was like, and they were good value, we actually did a couple more after. I think we paid something like £69 for us all to go to Cornwall. If you are paying less for accommodation then paying for day trips/meals isn't so bad. Worth looking in to xx0 -
Three nights in Malta coming up for me. It won't be cocktails by the pool but I'll enjoy it.
Flights £40
Car hire £15
B&B 3* hotel £54
Cashback and Avios earned related c£12.0 -

See this OP...holidays don't have to be expensive.
There are cheap flights and accommodation to be had off peak, and if you go self catering you don't spend any more on food than you do at home.
There are always last minute cheap package deals to be had. In recent years I got a week in Spain over new year for £130 in a very nice S/C apartment near the sea.
ETA It is also about spending habits and priorities. I would rather do without new clothes, kitchen, bathroom, expensive meals out, takeaways etc, walk or cycle rather than run a car, so I can get away on a cheap holiday once a year...'I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore'0 -
Is there any reason why your son hasn't repaid the money you lent him?
If there isn't, I'd bring the subject up and pin him down to a repayment plan.
No reason for him to be living the high life when you're fed up because you can't afford to take a holiday.
But if he's struggling financially, that's a bit different.
Did you discuss timescales for paying the money back when you lent him the money?
As has already been discussed, there's lots of ways to get away without spending a fortune, especially if you can take advantage of late deals.0
