Why lend money if it's that tight?

Were the mortgage company under the impression the deposit was gifted? They don't usually accept a borrowed deposit. Perhaps your son misunderstood too.

    This.

You will almost certainly have signed a document stating that the money was a gift and that you had no expectation it would be paid back or any stake in the property.

If you didn't mean that, why did you sign it? That would have been mortgage fraud.

I've gone several years between holidays in the past, you do start to crave one, but I agree with the other posters that you can do it very cheaply, especially if you can go in term time. The first few weeks in June, or the second or third week in September usually have lovely weather in this country.

Three nights in Malta coming up for me. It won't be cocktails by the pool but I'll enjoy it.

    Flights £40
    Car hire £15
    B&B 3* hotel £54

Cashback and Avios earned related c£12.

    Fantastic I love Malta.

    Have you been before?

I ask because you quote car hire. Malta has one of the best bus services anywhere. They are clean, cheap, air conditioned and you can get just about anywhere on the island using them.

Also driving in Malta can be an interesting experience. We've met several people who have returned their cars to hire company a day into a weeks hire. Most of them find that parking is the biggest problem, you can rarely park near where you want to be as Malta's streets are not the most car friendly especially the more interesting parts of the island and Valletta in particular whereas the bus station is just outside one of the main gates in the city wall. There are car parks and a park and ride for Valletta but once parked you end up on a bus anyway which takes you to the bus station.

It's not just the parking. The Maltese tend to drive on whichever side of the road is in the shade.

I didn't want to say anything about that as I don't want to put them off. :o

Some of the people who told me they'd returned their cars was because they were badly traumatised.

I've not had one for over 20 years, then it was only a cheap 1-bed flat rental in the UK (and I got the lounge sofa bed, didn't even get the bedroom).

    Nobody to go with either.

Can't feel much sympathy, to be honest.

Go on your own! Lots of people do it these days, I'm thinking about it myself for this year as I suspect my usual travel buddies might not be in a position to go away at the times I can.

This is the OPs 3rd thread in the last few months regarding their jealousy of their friends financial position, their own lack of holidays and the fact that they are still working in their 50s. Perhaps this time they might take in some of the suggestions made? There might not be much they can do about their financial position but most working couples can afford to put away a few pounds a week to save towards a holiday - eBay or car boot unwanted items and using the umpteen money-saving tips on here would boost their fund. However, the OPs main issue seems to be their mindset of jealousy, resentment and simmering anger - it's really not healthy and feeds on itself. This is what the OP should focus on changing if they want a happy life.

OP you CHOSE to prioritise giving/lending your son the money for a house deposit over enjoying life for yourselves. Your decision, you have to live with the consequences.

If the money wasn't a gift did you actually set out a repayment schedule? Does he know you're expecting it back as soon as?

Seems like you need to have a conversation with your son instead of feeling sorry for yourself.

I'm 51 btw and have no intention of giving up work, I like my job, but I love the money it brings in and I love all the things I can do because I work. I can imagine nothing worse than sitting home all day twiddling my thumbs, I'm far too young for that.

The OP seems to have forgotten that they did have a break in August - probably more recently than many people have been away.

Yes, I read those threads too. Thought the OP sounded very bitter - even complained that the friends had the nerve to claim their bus pass! Surprised they still had any.
