I'm public sector and can confirm that the pension situation for me (mid 30's) is definitely not the same as some of my longer service colleagues. The pension forecast for the newer staff is far less favourable than the people currently retiring into the older pension plan. All swings and roundabouts I suppose
But still far better than most of a similar age in the private sector.

Most, maybe, definitely not all. That just means some in the private sector should be treating their workers better anyway, no need for a race to the bottom or a 'who has it worst?' competition.

I dont disagree with that. If a holiday is part of your lifestyle then thats fine. If someone feels they "need" a holiday then thats another story.

I need holidays! Not always to do with needing to change my lifestyle, I just never feel the way I do on holiday in this country. I have travelled to loads of the UK, and LOVE a break in this country, but I do feel the need to walk around in sunshine in a foreign country. You just don't get that same feeling here!

Also, there have been times when I've had to go without for a few years. At the end of it, I was crying to get away. I'd had an awful few years (married and divorced, house sale/purchase then had to do it all again 2 years later, FIL died, my dad died after a long cancer battle, my cat died, friends were ill - one terminally, suicide attempt (friend's son). I seriously was making lists as there were so many things going on and I'd forget. I just needed to sit on a terrace and watch the sea for hours and let it all out.

I think I would have sold a body part to go away that year! Thankfully found a mega cheap deal. I now make sure I go away once or twice a year for a cheap week abroad. It helps keep the balance in my life!

If the OP is still around and wants a cheap deal, I will shout when the cheap Wowcher deal comes back - it usually does twice a year - although now sells out in a day.

Re:the bolded. I think this is far less true than it used to be. These days, it's really only true for a minority of private sector workers, mostly in the upper echelons. It might be true for some people currently in their 50s or 60s but even in that age group I think it's no longer the case for most people, and certainly for anyone under about 45 it isn't the case, and never has been. I think a lot od public sector jobs and pensions are less good than they once were, but still generally significantly better than the equivalent job / level of job in the private sector. Public sector workers often have far better benefits in terms of things such as paid sick leave, too.

I appreciate that this is tangenital to the OPs original issue
    !

I think you're right. I had originally included 'graduate level' but decided to delete it. That was partly as it seemed a bit superior but also it can apply to people like plumbers too. It's one of the reasons that the government is desperately advertising for teachers as particularly in IT, science and maths they'd get paid so much more in the private sector.

I don't think it is tangential as what's at the bottom of all this isn't holidays per se but the fact he's madly envious of his friends with public sector pensions.

No doubt he'll be back again in a few months moaning, inviting comments and then not responding.:D
