I very much doubt the police will get involved. They will see it as a civil affair.

Looks like it will be an expensive divorce...

It will be better if you and your estranged wife can come to some arrangement.

the V5 only shows who is the registered keeper of the car, nothing to do with ownership.

The owner of your car is the finance company

Iv sent email to dvla enquiringly how ownership works so will wait but I have the original documents on finance and everything in my name and what our my options on getting my car back in my name I'm not sure how dvla will deal with my request but as you said getting my name on documents could be tricky
I'm no that's sure on the law of the matter though interesting dilemma

Dont bother waiting, they will not help you as its nothing to do with them.

Ownership is the legal owner - proved by a receipt or invoice when you bought the car, sellers name, address, buyers name and address and the date they bought it.

Registered Keeper is whos name is one the V5 - the person responsible for all speeding and parking tickets and who is legally responsible for paying the VED.

If you registered it in your wife's(ex) name without giving it to her with written evidence, then you are still the legal owner.

Good luck with trying to get the car back, you will need it. Are you divorced or just separated?

How many times. The finance co. is the owner of the car.

    NO HE DOES NOT!

C'mon guys, it's been stated a number of times now. Neither the OP nor his wife has any legal title to the car, the finance co owns it and the OP has he responsibility for it under the terms of his finance agreement. He has the right to take back the car any time he chooses.

I would ask this though, does the finance co. know that the wife has the car?

For the purposes of the difference of legal owner/registered keeper then the OP is the owner.

He cant very well call up the finance company and say to them, can you pop round my ex wife's house and collect your car for me, can he?!

I wonder what the finance company will say when you query the ownership and they find out you transferred the car to someone elses name?

I wouldnt of thought it would make any different if the OP transfered the registered keeper to his wife, as long as he keeps making the payments.

Exactly, which is why I'm asking the OP whether the finance co. are aware the car is now registered in his wife's name and at her address. My suspicion is they don't.
