NST February Challenge : A Winter Voyage

  • Quick check in

Today hasn't been a NSD - spent £4.50 on some liquid for my vape thing. I've not had a real cigarette since Friday now and I'm feeling pretty great about that! That was a necessary purchase if it keeps me off the real ones!

No grocery shopping though or food spends. Took lunch in with me today and I'll make packed lunch ready for tomorrow.

    1) I'm grateful for having prepped meals to go to when the OH isn't in
    2) I'm grateful for the *small* amount of flexibility I built up today - a whole 34 minutes but that's 34 minutes early I can leave tomorrow!
    3) I'm grateful for a tidy house - keeping everything tidy makes me feel better. :D

NSD number 6. Plodding on. Had to go and empty my paper sack as it was full. Tackled an enormous washing up mountain including all the roasting dishes, oven trays and a couple of cake tins - cutlery drawer is now full. Have been round twice since rounding up stray pots that had hidden in corners. Put the bin out for collection.

Very tired but feel as if I am getting somewhere (not sure it looks like it yet). Whittling out process is slow but think I am learning as I go along, refining my thought processes. Just wait until I finish the paper mountain and start on fabric and silks (silks are mostly in order, finally used/ stored all the bits I found mixed in with everything else when I packed for the builders).

Today I am grateful for food from the fridge and freezer (using up so I can see what else is in there), for DS3, Beloved and guest (second guest went home, first guest is back) entertaining anf feeding themselves, and for my bed.
My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.

Foxholes - carrot cake sounds yummy. I never think of buying trex isn't it just fat?

    .

Trex is a lard substitute - just a hard white vegetable based fat.

For some bizarre reason the kids are making one, count it! one tortilla wrap this week, freezing it for next week and then making a taco next week according to DS1, I can only think they are making enchilladas, rather than tacos. As they are making wraps not taco shells?
The Food Tech teacher does not seem to know much about food! The nonsense he comes home talking is unreal. There is nothing balanced or healthy about what they are cooking either.

Dia Pita - can you make the yoghurt with soya milk in the same way? Using soya yog as a starter, of course.

TOG - thank you for telling us about those guys - what a great ending.

Today I am grateful for sunshine, for a run, for free gf bread still for dd, for enjoying walking, for a chat with mum.

Yes you can, but it is not as thick as dairy yoghurt, this is a great recipe and uses an oven, but a flask will work just as well.

  • Well DD's cookery did not happen as she forgot to take her ingredients so I made her cook it for tea tonight instead. She doubled up the ingredients so her and DH could have it for tea.

Someone up thread mentioned an epiphany with their evening meal and eating with their children - it must be the day for it as I have also had an epiphany about my family's evening meal.
Every evening I cook a meal of some description and about once every 2 weeks I announce I am not cooking and the family do their own tea - usually pizza or cereal.
Today it dawned on me that DD has a hot meal for school dinners and DH has a 2 course hot meal at lunchtimes (since he started working in a school) so why am I slaving after a full day at work to cook another hot meal????
So I have announced that from tomorrow I will no longer be cooking a meal that takes longer than 15mins for tea and instead I will do beans/egg on toast or even bacon sandwiches and if people are still hungry they can have a dessert or piece of fruit - DH agrees and says he won't argue. DD has announced she doesn't eat a hot meal as she is always too late for lunch - I told her to get a grip and get to lunch on time as I am not cooking in the week.

This is going to save me so much time as most evenings I cook for 30-45mins (sometimes longer) and I can do something else now.

Today has been a NSD taking me up to 4 so far.

In negative news my washing machine is faulty and I can't get an engineer until next week!! Also my car is faulty and going to the garage later this week so will have 2 large bills soon!!

    Today I am grateful for:
    1. DD cooking tea
    2. Online engineer booking (the machine broke after Customer Service had shut but you can book online 24/7)
    3. Marmalade cake I made is amazing and I have just had a piece before bed.
  • Evening!!!

It's been a hectic day and it's a quick check in for your Captain this evening. I'll try and post more fully tomorrow. It's great to see so much productivity on here though... house clean ups, new recipes, loads of NSDs rolling in - awesome job crew!!!

For me also, today = NSD number 5

    Today I am grateful for:
    • Having the courage to say no to someone who wasn't good for me, and believing I am worth more, even if it means being on my own
    • Having this forum to come to and say 'OMG what have I done???' and laugh about it haha!
    • A counsellor I saw last year who helped me see myself differently. A year on and I'm drawing on the realisations she brought to light. Thank you!
Tomorrow I'll be unpacking one of my flares, as I need to get a haircut (does that count as a spend if I've budgeted for it... I don't know?), and some basics. Can I live for a few days without milk...? I have sooooo many herbal teas! Is it habit making me go out looking for things to buy? Probably! I haven't spent any money since... last Friday and it's burning a hole in my pocket!!! RESIST!!! I have food in... ok - I'm slightly bored of it - but I have supplies. I'm going to challenge myself to RESIST and NOT spend any money on food or milk. Where's my lucky charm? I'm going to keep it on me all day!!!

...Use the force Luke!!! (my name isn't Luke haha but you get the idea!).

Got some more wall papering done this evening. Motivating myself to do a little bit every day definitely works and keeps me going in terms of feeling I'm getting a little more done that just the relentless daily chores. Good for me head.

Off to the hammock below deck.
