Plusnet said they couldn't (read wouldn't) allow a switch from fibre to copper, so I expect to have to switch ISP to achieve it.
I'm pretty certain 'wouldn't' is the accurate answer.

I've got a few months to go before I can switch. I am currently with Plusnet but I'm in contract until May. I moved house whilst in contract with Plusnet so they signed me up to a new 24 month contract in my current home. I could have sworn it was another 18 months but when I phoned up to try and get a new deal the adviser just kept repeating over and over again that I had a 24 month contract.

I'm trying to work out whether I really need Fiber or if regular BB would suffice as I haven't been overly impressed with Plusnet's fibre speeds.

Depends upon what you need and what you will get on ADSL .
If your fibre is slow it suggests an internal problem usually .Have you actually measured it from the master socket via ethernet cable not WiFi .If the reading was lets say 30meg at the master socket but only 10 meg at your tablet then its your problem and its going to be a problem carried forward to any service .

As you have the old Plusnet setup you'll need to check which router was provided to see if it has an ADSL input. I never took the PN router as I had cable before and just carried on using my own router with the OR modem. On reflection the chances are they would ship the same one to all customers so it probably does have ADSL and RJ45 inputs.

Either way the chances are you'll be provided with whatever router you need by the new ISP.

What speeds for FTTC and ADSL does this checker http://www.dslchecker.bt.com show for your number?

What do you use the internet for?

The internet is used for watching catch-up tv, streaming films, streaming music, working from home which involves transferring large files and video conferencing, and just general fannying around online.

No I haven't measured the speed from the master socket via ethernet cable (yet). I'll add that to the to-do list.

I might have been a bit disingenuous saying that Plusnet is slow. In my previous home I had Sky Fibre before switching to Plusnet and it was fantastic. Plusnet on the other hand has a tendency to drop and I'm cross with Plusnet about the 24 month contract thing.

I think it does have an ADSL input. It's the Technicolor Technicolor 582n router.

I'm not entirely sure what numbers I need to be looking at and I don't think it gave any for FTTC.

If you transfer large files to work then you may well miss the far higher upstream speeds of fibre.

It looks like your ADSL downstream would happily support multiple concurrent video streams unless you are looking at 4K streaming.

I used to have fibre (FTTC) from BT and it was fine, but when my contract expired I asked to go back to standard broadband (about 14mB where I live) because my daughter had moved out and this speed was adequate for the browsing and streaming we now do.

Both BT and Talktalk said Openreach would not allow the line to be downgraded and said that was tough, I would have to continue to pay for fibre. Plusnet confirmed Openreach would not downgrade but said they were willing to provide a new line without charge. I therefore now have 12 month contract with Plusnet for 'free' standard BB for just the price of the standard phone line and no setup costs.

I didn't need a new router. I still had a BT Hub5 ADSL router for fibre which is an excellent router. I have kept this for Plusnet. Entering the new user name and password for the Plusnet account took a few seconds, no other changes were needed.
