HELP! Cat scratching new sofa !!!!

  • Hi
I'm not really a cat person but in my canine psychology book there was an example of sound aversion where it said that the authors friend saw her cat scratching the sofa and as she turned to tell it off she knocked a pan off the draining board - the cat ran and didn't do it again!
I know that it was accidentally negatively reinforced to leave the sofa but maybe you could make a loud noise (without her seeing you have done it) when she starts on the furniture :)
  • I rub the corners with a few drops of orange oil. We've had a few "slip ups" but the sofa is still pretty much intact 6 months later! The cat is never left on her own in the living room though.
  • SMALL water pistol they soon learn especially if you're a good shot

I want to buy a leather suite but have 2 cats that claw my current sofa which is material, are they likely to claw at a leather one? I'm thinking they claw a material one as they can pull at it.
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D
  • They dont claw at it but they do run over it when having a funny five minutes and you will almost certainly you will find it scratched to bits as is ours. So my advice is unless you have a very docile cat dont buy one.

I've got 2 cats, they leave my leather sofa alone, it was here before they were!!

They have 2 scratching posts, and I HAVE a water pistol!! anything they did, that I DIDNT like when they first got here, they got a shot of cold water!! it has worked wonders!!

    Good luck

I have tried a scratch post before, didn't work.

I will now invest in a super soaker! :rotfl:

  • Dont want to rain on anyones parade but my cats have trashed my leather suite - I'll send you photo evidence if you want. I thought I might not have problems with leather but my oldest cat scratched the seat of the sofa on the day it was delivered - very depressing.

  • I bought a packet of sticky strips, they're clear so you can't see them, but it stops cats scratching as they don't like the feeling on their pads.

And 100% yes to the water pistol, works brilliantly :D
  • We bought two leather sofas for the conservatory...two one year old constantly hyper brothers have ruined them by running around the house madly!
