Hello
My Bengal rescue cat does exactly what UK Tigerlily's cat does, lies on the floor and "spurs" the base of my once lovely leather settees! I tried all sorts including a light spray of water, but she liked this, licked her lips and carried on where she left off.
She has toys scratching posts galore and a cat door to access the great outdoors whenever she wants, but no the settee is her favourite. Unfortunately I do not think there is a fashion for fringed leather at the base with bits of stuffing showing through!
:rotfl:
As for sleeping she switches every few days, from a windowsill, to pulling a bath towel into the bath and sleeping in there, somehow pulling out the kick board under a kitchen unit and sleeping in the gap!
I have tried proper beds, cushions, and other comfortable looking sites but she definitely has a mind of her own!
Enjoy your new little one but be prepared for a completely overactive, cheeky, stubborn and absolutely adorable addition to your home.0 -
Good luck.... I have given up with getting any decent furniture, I just have to live in a mess as I have cats

cats will be cats and no matter how intelligent a particular breed is, once they find somewhere that gives their claws a good workout they will return to that place again, and again, and again...
i have two siamese cats - one of the intelligent breeds - i also have two destroyed sofas, one destroyed rug, one destroyed doormat. i also own two perfectly untouched scratching posts!
i have however, recently found that they absolutely LOVE getting their claws into a wicker cat tower i purchased a few months ago. finally, i think i may be able to risk purchasing some new sofas, a new rug and a new doormat...:)0 -
On the declawing in the states issue, it's not done just to protect furniture it's done to protect people and children getting clawed by the cat ( I don't agree with it either by the way just saying it's not purely to protect furniture!) My brother lives in america and my sister in law has 2 cats that were declawed she had to do it as she got them when she lived at her parent's home, one was already done and the other was a kitten she found in the middle of the road that had been abandoned, she took it home and it basically attacked everyone, she didn't settle down and after a couple of month's her father said she had to be declawed or put to sleep as other family members were having babies and it was getting dangerous, so she had her declawed.
Also about the lack of defenses, a lot of cats in the US tend to be housecats and especially ones that have been de clawed.
I really don't think it happens too much now.Hell yeah!!0 -
Thankyou all for your usefull responces, i will just have to see what he is like when i get him home, hopefully 24th dec.
i will stay in frontroom whilst he is in here and if neither me or oh are in there he will have to come out if he takes a shine to sofas!
i will try the scratch posts etc, and see how we go from there!
also in responce to declawing as i said before it is sick, and reguardless if a rescue cat thats attacking...solution is not declawing! im sure there are more options available then put it to sleep or get it declawed!!!
and no, i would not punish the cat if he does attack the sofas, i will try and show him thats what his posts are for...if he ignores me i shall persevere.
some on here have said their cat hasnt even touched sofas, so maybe ill get lucky..if not ill just not let him in f/r unsupervised. i wouldnt as a kitten anyways.
thanks all xx:cool:0 -
when i got my cat, i sprayed the scatching post with catnip spray which i got from the pet shop. he loved it and it kept him away fro the funiture. i usually keep all his toys around the post when not being used so he knows this is his section of the room. seems to work for us quite well0

Ok, please don't shout at me... I don't have a cat (yet), and I remember seeing these Soft Claws:

Ok, I haven't done any research about them, and I don't know if they are any good, but maybe it is an option? (Oh, and you don't have to get them in silly colours)Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
People who declaw shouldn't have catas, simple as. be kinder to rehome to a family that dopn't mutilate their pets. It's not just that iot leaves a cat defenceless, it's all about other things such as climbing, balance, they say it's like amputating our fingers at the knuckle. I'm sure the Vets would be able to explain cause I can't google right now but it's nothing like us losing a fingernail! And yeah it can cause behavioural problems.0

You might as well declaw them instead, it's the same thing really, your stopping the cat doing what comes naturally. You either train the kitten not to scratch your furniture or you put up with them scratching your furniture but to take away them not being able to scratch at all is just cruel.0
