Suffolk Lass, I love this diary for how sociable you are. I read the second paragraph, and I’ve just spent the last 15 minutes contacting old friends, neighbours and work colleagues to arrange meet ups. It’s so easy to let life pass you by or get in the way of maintaining relationships.
Thank you 😀

If I'm taking my clothes off I like it warm. But I can't have a hot bath because I have no bath. A sauna is often available though just after my son has had one of those showers, that is too warm

Cold bedroom, warm bathroom here. Removed the radiators from our dining room and kitchen but the aga is better than any rad. If it were not for hot water I think we might dump the central heating boiler too...
My skin is really suffering at the moment and my hands are dry all the time. The joys of gardening!!
We got the go-ahead from our friends to take pup with us so he will be joining us for a party and two nights where he will sleep in the utility room. I really need to tell the big house group that we will be leaving a day earlier than them.

We inspected two of our hives yesterday - one was so big we popped on a second super (chamber full of frames just for stores - aka honey) with brood across 7 or 8 frames. There were a few more drone cells than I would like but if our Queen is failing, they will sort it out. There were plenty of guard bees buzzing round our heads but apart from when DH squashed one, no stings. The second hive was much smaller (maybe 6 frames of brood) but that is probably good. We removed the remaining food (fondant) from that hive as the warm weather means they can happily forage for themselves now.
We have two more hives to check properly today. Hoping no swarm cells and in one case, hoping we can separate the queen from the lower chamber where the old comb is so we can remove that in a couple of weeks.
In the dead zone for money this week but I had a fiddle-faddle with big river subscriptions so that 15% discount will apply to our next delivery (next week). I also ordered a one-off loo paper as our subscription is struggling to deliver the size I need and with puppy training, we have really used a lot more than normal.
Pup was awake and shouting at 02.30 this morning. I left him to DH as it was his turn but I got up at just after 05.30 this morning to see to him. He is currently in his crate (door open) on the floor, crammed into my study - fast asleep. We've got to take him to the vets today for his monthly fuss and familiarisation (they also weigh him and send him home with a chewy flea and tick treatment) - it's so he associates the vets with something nice. I'm not sure it will last as he will be having his amorous ambitions curtailed in the next few months. We left Pup in his crate when we went to the bees (on the farm) yesterday and when we got back he was really yipping and distressed (separation anxiety). I told DH (who gets really upset when pup is upset) to unload the car at the back door while I went in the front and liberated him, but far less fuss and straight out on his lead to know all was normal. He was a lot quicker to settle. He needs to understand this is normal so the fuss reduces - preferably in the next week because of the house share and friends visit.Save £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)

Yesterday we went into the inherited colony. Loads of lovely calm bees, we had to cut off a number of pieces of brace comb (that is where they fill a space with wax they have made). Not surprising as the lady who gave them had filled the outside of the box with super frames rather than brood, so only half the depth they should have been. With all the bu**ering about manipulations in the end we could not see the Queen - too many places for her to hide in the manky comb so we removed all the super frames, replaced them with freshly drawn brood frames (it's called checker boarding) in between the old ones so hopefully she can start laying in the new comb. Once that happens, we can swap them around and work the old (potentially diseased) dark comb towards the outside of the box ready to remove it. Not the Bailey Comb Change we were planning, but less dramatic change for the bees. They have plenty of room to expand and we popped the brace comb in a space at the top so they can retrieve the nectar before we remove it on Monday and store it ready to melt it down. As we are off on our travels immediately after the weekend we wanted them to be in a stable state with room to expand before we leave.
No money news today.
Found out the person I spoke to on Wednesday morning in the hall has now tested positive (along with ten others from an event last Friday) - at least he let me know last night. I attended my neighbour's funeral yesterday and my cousin's surprise birthday breakfast today. I really don't want it. Period. But especially immediately before a two week plus holiday.
Another bank card of DH's bit the dust yesterday. He tried to get £30 cash out and it gave him his card but no cash... so he put the card back in to check if the transaction thought it had completed and of course, with two insertions of his card within five minutes, it kept his card. It has now been cancelled and a new one won't arrive for 5 working days to Monday week away - when we will be on hols.
